La$_{1.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$NiO$_4$ develops charge and spin stripe orders at temperatures of roughly 200 K, with modulation wave vectors that are temperature independent. Various probes of spin and charge response have provided independent evidence for some sort of change below $\sim50$ K. In combination with a new set of neutron scattering measurements, we propose a unified interpretation of all of these observations in terms of a freezing of Ni-centered charges stripes, together...

We have studied magnetic correlations in several compositions of stripe-ordered La2-xSrxNiO4. In this paper we show how polarized-neutron scattering has helped uncover important features of the magnetic ordering and spin dynamics. In particular, polarization analysis has enabled us (1) to characterize a spin reorientation transition, (2) to identify anisotropy gaps in the spin excitation spectrum, and (3) to investigate an anomalous dip in the spin-wave intensity suggestive o...

The experimental observations of stripes in superconducting cuprates and insulating nickelates clearly show the modulation in charge and spin density. However, these have proven to be rather insensitive to the harmonic structure and (site or bond) ordering. Using 139La NMR in La2NiO4.17, we show that in the 1/3 hole doped nickelate below the freezing temperature the stripes are strongly solitonic and site ordered with Ni3+ ions carrying S=1/2 in the domain walls and Ni2+ ions...

Polarized and unpolarized neutron inelastic scattering has been used to measure the spin excitations in the spin-charge-ordered stripe phase of La5/3Sr1/3NiO4. At high energies, sharp magnetic modes are observed characteristic of a static stripe lattice. The energy spectrum is described well by a linear spin wave model with intra- and inter-stripe exchange interactions between neighbouring Ni spins given by J = 15 +/- 1.5 meV and J' = 7.5 +/- 1.5 meV respectively. Hole doping in Nd${}_{2}$NiO${}_{4.00}$ can be either achieved by substituting the trivalent Nd atoms by bivalent alkaline earth metals or by oxygen doping, yielding Nd${}_{2}$NiO${}_{4+\delta}$. In this study, we investigated the interplay between oxygen and spin ordering for a low oxygen doping concentration i.e. Nd${}_{2}$NiO${}_{4.10}$. Although the extra oxygen doping level remains rather modest with only one out of 20 possible interstitial tetrahedral lattice sites occu...

The magnetic excitation spectrums of charge stripe ordered La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO(4) x = 0.45 and x = 0.4 were studied by inelastic neutron scattering. We found the magnetic excitation spectrum of x = 0.45 from the ordered Ni^2+ S = 1 spins to match that of checkerboard charge ordered La(1.5)Sr(0.5)NiO(4). The distinctive asymmetry in the magnetic excitations above 40 meV was observed for both doping levels, but an additional ferromagnetic mode was observed in x = 0.45 and not in th...

The low energy spin excitations of La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO(4), x = 0.275 and 1/3, have been investigated by unpolarized- and polarized-inelastic neutron scattering from single crystals. A pattern of magnetic diffuse scattering is observed in both compositions, and is consistent with quasi-one-dimensional AFM spin correlations along the charge stripes. Analysis of the energy lineshape for x = 1/3 indicates that the diffuse scattering is inelastic with a characteristic energy of 1.40 +...

The charge ordering in La1.5Sr0.5NiO4 has been studied with neutron diffraction technique. An interesting rearrangement of the charge ordering was observed as a function of temperature. With decreasing temperature, a checkerboard-type charge order is formed below T{CO-C} ~ 480 K. It is, however, taken over by the stripe-type charge order with an incommensurability twice as large as that of the spin order below T{CO-IC} ~ 180 K. Surprisingly, the stripe phase persists up to x ...

We studied the stripe phase of La1.8Sr0.2NiO4 using neutron diffraction, resonant soft x-ray diffraction (RSXD) at the Ni L2,3 edges, and resonant x-ray diffraction (RXD) at the Ni K threshold. Differences in the q-space resolution of the different techniques have to be taken into account for a proper evaluation of diffraction intensities associated with the spin and charge order superstructures. We find that in the RSXD experiment the spin and charge order peaks show the sam...

The temperature evolution of structural effects associated with charge (CO) and spin order (SO) in La$_{1.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$NiO$_{4}$ has been investigated using neutron powder diffraction. We report an anomalous shrinking of the $c/a$ lattice parameter ratio that correlates with $T_{\rm CO}$. The sign of this change can be explained by the change in interlayer Coulomb energy between the static stripe-ordered state and the fluctuating stripe-ordered state or the charge-disordere...
