At low temperature the holes doped into the NiO(2) planes of La(2)NiO(4.133) by the excess oxygen collect in diagonal stripes that separate narrow antiferromagnetic domains. The magnetic order drops abruptly to zero at T_m = 110.5 K, but charge order remains with a period of 3a/2. We show that application of a magnetic field in the regime T > T_m induces staggered magnetic order of period 3a due to the net magnetic moment of the high-temperature bond-centered stripes, togethe...

We present diffraction data on a single-layered manganite La(0.42)Sr(1.58)MnO4 with hole doping (x>0.5). Overdoped La(0.42)Sr(1.58)MnO4 exhibits a complex ordering of charges, orbitals and spins. Single crystal neutron diffraction experiments reveal three incommensurate and one commensurate order parameters to be tightly coupled. The position and the shape of the distinct superstructure scattering points to a stripe arrangement in which ferromagnetic zigzag chains are disrupt...

We present magnetization and specific heat data of a La5/3Sr1/3NiO4 single crystal in high magnetic fields. From the charge and spin stripe ordering temperatures, as well as a magnetic low temperature transition, we have constructed the electronic phase diagram for fields up to 14 Tesla. While the charge stripe ordering temperature TCO is independent of the magnetic field, there is a significant shift of the spin stripe ordering temperature TSO of about 1.5 K/ Tesla, if the m...

We investigate the consequences of the stripe formation in the nickelate La5/3Sr1/3NiO4 for the details of its crystal structure and electronic states. Our data are based on numerical simulations within density functional theory (DFT) and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). The on-site Coulomb interaction is included in terms of the LDA+U scheme. Structure optimization of preliminary experimental data indicates a strong interaction between the structural and electro...

The quasi-two-dimensional nickelate La4Ni3O8 (La-438) is an anion deficient n=3 Ruddlesden-Popper (R-P) phase that consists of trilayer networks of square planar Ni ions, formally assigned as Ni1+ and Ni2+ in a 2:1 ratio. While previous studies on polycrystalline samples have identified a 105 K phase transition with a pronounced electronic and magnetic response but weak lattice character, no consensus on the origin of this transition has been reached. Here we show using synch...

Neutron and X-ray scattering studies have provided strong evidence for coupled spatial modulations of charge and spin densities in layered nickelates and cuprates. The accumulated results for La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO(4+d) are consistent with the strongly-modulated topological-stripe concept. Clues from Nd-doped La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) suggest similar behavior for the cuprates. The experimental results are summarized, and features that conflict with an interpretation based on a Fermi-surfac...

We study nickelate-centered and oxygen-centered stripe phases in doped La$_{2}$NiO$_{4}$ materials. We use an inhomogeneous Hartree-Fock and random-phase approximation approach including both electron-electron and electron-lattice(e-l) coupling for a layer of La$_{2}$NiO$_{4}$. We find that whether the ground state after commensurate hole doping comprises Ni-centered or O-centered charge-localized stripes depends sensitively on the e-l interaction. With increasing e-l interac...

The in-plane oxygen vibrations in La2NiO4 are investigated for several hole-doping concentrations both theoretically and experimentally via inelastic neutron scattering. Using an inhomogeneous Hartree-Fock plus RPA numerical method in a two-dimensional Peierls-Hubbard model, it is found that the doping induces stripe ordering of localized charges, and that the strong electron-lattice coupling causes the in-plane oxygen modes to split into two subbands. This result agrees with...

Ab initio calculations have been performed to unravel the origin of the recently found superlattice peaks in the trilayer nickelate La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$. These peaks arise from static charge ordering of Ni$^{2+}$/ Ni$^{1+}$ stripes oriented at 45$^{\circ}$ to the Ni-O bonds. An insulating state originates from a combination of structural distortions and magnetic order, with the gap being formed solely within the d$_{x^2-y^2}$ manifold of states. When doped, electrons or holes wo...

In several strongly correlated electron systems, defects, charge and local lattice distortions are found to show complex inhomogeneous spatial distributions. There is growing evidence that such inhomogeneity plays a fundamental role in unique functionality of quantum complex materials. La1.72Sr0.28NiO4 is a prototypical strongly correlated material showing spin striped order associated with lattice and charge modulations. In this work we present the spatial distribution of th...
