We report the temperature T and oxygen concentration dependences of the penetration depth of grain-aligned YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta} with \delta= 0.0, 0.3 and 0.43. The values of the in-plane \lambda_{ab}(0) and out-of-plane \lambda_{c}(0) penetration depths, the low temperature linear term in \lambda_{ab}(T), and the ratio \lambda_{c}(0) /\lambda_{ab}(T) were found to increase with increasing $\delta$. The systematic changes of the linear term in \lambda_{ab}(T) with T_c found here and in recent work on HgBa_2Ca_{n-1} Cu_nO_{2n+2+\delta} (n = 1 and 3) are discussed.

We have measured the penetration depth $\lambda(T)$ on $\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7}$ thin films from transmission at 120, 330 and 510~GHz, between 5 and 50~K. Our data yield simultaneously the absolute value and the temperature dependence of $\lambda(T)$. In high quality films $\lambda(T)$ exhibits the same linear temperature dependence as single crystals, showing its intrinsic nature, and $\lambda(0)=1750\,{\rm \AA}$. In a lower quality one, the more usual $T^2$ dependence is fou...

We have studied the penetration depth for a model of $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7}$ involving pairing both in the $CuO_{2}$ planes and in the CuO chains. In this model pairing in the planes is due to an attractive interaction, while Coulomb repulsion induces in the chains an order parameter with opposite sign. Due to the anticrossing produced by hybridization between planes and chains, one obtains a d-wave like order parameter which changes sign on a single sheet of the Fermi surface a...

We report on measurements of the low temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth lambda_ab in several single crystals of La_2-xSr_xCuO_4, Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8 and YBa_2Cu_3O_6+x at various doping levels ranging from the under- to the overdoped regimes by using a novel single-coil technique achieving 10 pm resolution. We have found a linear dependence of lambda_ab in all samples with a rapidly increasing slope dlambda_ab/dT as doping decreases. Our analysis of the da...

We present measurements of the magnetic field dependence of the penetration depth Lambda(H) for untwinned YBa_2Cu_3O_6.95 for temperatures from 1.2 to 70 K in dc fields up to 42 gauss and directions 0, 45 and 90 degrees with respect to the crystal b-axis. The experiment uses an ac susceptometer with fields applied parallel to the ab-plane of thin platelet samples. The resolution is about 0.15 Angstroms in zero dc field, degrading to 0.2 or 0.3 Angstroms at the higher fields. ...

The oxygen-isotope (^16O/^18O) effect (OIE) on the in-plane penetration depth $\lambda_{ab} (0)$ in underdoped Y_{1-x}Pr_xBa_2Cu_3O_{7-delta} was studied by muon-spin rotation. A pronounced OIE on $\lambda_{ab}^{-2}(0)$ was observed with a relative isotope shift of $\Delta\lambda^{-2}_{ab}/\lambda^{-2}_{ab}$=-5(2)% for x =0.3 and -9(2)% for x=0.4. It arises mainly from the oxygen-mass dependence of the in-plane effective mass $m_{ab}^{\ast}$. The OIE exponents of T_{c} and of...

The temperatuer dependence of the magnetic penetration depth of grain aligned YBa2Cu4O8 has been measured along the ab plane and c-axis. Both $\lambda_ab$ and $\lambda_c$ vary as \sqrt{T} up to 0.4Tc implying a square root density of states at low energy. The results are discussed in terms of a proximity model of alternating stacked superconducting and normal layers

Measurements of the $c$-axis penetration depth $\lambda_c$ in the cuprates reveal a low-temperature $T$ dependence which is inconsistent with simple models of coupling between the CuO$_2$ layers. In this paper, we examine whether a model based on {\it incoherent} hopping between the layers can account for this low-$T$ behavior. We compute $\lambda_c$ directly from linear response theory and compare our results with recent experimental measurements on $\rm YBa_2u_3O_{7-\delta}...

We have succeeded in growing very high purity (99.995%) YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-delta} crystals in BaZrO_3 crucibles and have measured Delta-lambda(T) and R_s(T) at 1 GHz in crystals with various oxygen treatments. For an oxygen vacancy level of delta=0.007, Delta-lambda and R_s essentially reproduce our previous results and show no sign of the existence of the two order parameter components as recently reported by Srikanth et al. on BaZrO_3-grown crystals. For other oxygen concentrati...

The zero temperature in plane penetration depth in an untwinned single crystal of optimally doped YBa_2Cu_3O_6.93 is highly anisotropic. This fact has been interpreted as evidence that a large amount of the condensate resides in the chains. On the other hand, the temperature dependence of lambda_a(T)/lambda_a(0) and lambda_b(T)/lambda_b(0) (where the b-direction is along the chains) are not very different. This constrains theories and is, in particular, difficult to understan...

Recent measurements of the London penetration depth tensor in the cuprates find a weak temperature dependence along the c-direction which is seemingly inconsistent with evidence for d-wave pairing deduced from in-plane measurements. We demonstrate in this paper that these disparate results are not in contradiction, but can be explained within a theory based on incoherent quasiparticle hopping between the CuO2 layers. By relating the calculated temperature dependence of the pe...
