The oxygen-isotope (^{16}O/^{18}O) effect (OIE) on the in-plane magnetic penetration depth \lambda_{ab}(0) in optimally-doped YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta} and La_{1.85}Sr_{0.15}CuO_4, and in slightly underdoped YBa_2Cu_4O_8 and Y_{0.8}Pr_{0.2}Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta} was studied by means of muon-spin rotation. A substantial OIE on \lambda_{ab}(0) with an OIE exponent \beta_O=-d\ln\lambda_{ab}(0)/d\ln M_O\approx - 0.2 (M_O is the mass of the oxygen isotope), and a small OIE on the transi...

The investigation of the penetration depth \lambda_{ab}(T,p) in YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x} crystals allowed to observe the following features of the superfluid density n_s(T,p)\propto \lambda_{ab}^{-2}(T,p) as a function of temperature T<Tc/2 and carrier concentration 0.078\le p\le 0.16 in CuO_2 planes: (i) n_s(0,p) depends linearly on p, (ii) the derivative |dn_s(T,p)/dT|_{T\to 0} depends on p slightly in the optimally and moderately doped regions (0.10<p\le 0.16); however, it rapidly...

We report on a systematic finite size scaling analysis of in-plane penetration depth data taken on Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+\delta}$ epitaxially-grown films and single crystals, and of in-plane and out of plane data taken on YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.7}$ aligned powder. It is shown that the tails in temperature dependence of the penetration depths, appearing around the transition temperature, are fully consistent with a finite size effect. This uncovers the granular natur...

We calculate the penetration depth $\lambda$ in the $a$, $b$ and $c$ directions for a simple model of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$. In this model there are two layers---representing a CuO$_2$ plane and a CuO chain---per unit cell. There is a BCS--like pairing (both $s$ wave and $d$ wave are considered) interaction localised in the CuO$_2$ planes. The CuO chains become superconducting at temperatures lower than $T_c$ because of their proximity to the planes, and there is an induced gap ...

The temperature dependence of the London penetration depth \lambda was measured for an untwined single crystal of YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta} along the three principal crystallographic directions (a, b, and c). Both in-plane components (\lambda_a and \lambda_b) show an inflection point in their temperature dependence which is absent in the component along the c-direction (\lambda_c). The data provide convincing evidence that the in-plane superconducting order parameter is a mixture...

Zero-field electron spin resonance (ESR) of dilute Gd ions substituted for Y in the cuprate superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{\rm 6+y}$ is used as a novel technique for measuring the absolute value of the low temperature magnetic penetration depth $\lambda(T\to 0)$. The Gd ESR spectrum of samples with $\approx 1%$ substitution was obtained with a broadband microwave technique that measures power absorption bolometrically from 0.5 GHz to 21 GHz. This ESR spectrum is determined b...

A pronounced OIE on the transition temperature $T_c$ as well as on $\lambda_{ab}^{-2}(0)$ was observed, which mainly arises from the oxygen sites within the superconducting CuO$_2$ planes (100 % within error bar). The values of the c...

To clarify the order parameter symmetry of cuprates, the magnetic penetration depth $\lambda$ was measured along the crystallographic directions $a$, $b$, and $c$ in single crystals of YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ via muon spin rotation. This method is direct, bulk sensitive, and unambiguous. The temperature dependences of $\lambda_a^{-2}$ and $\lambda_b^{-2}$ exhibit an inflection point at low temperatures as is typical for two-gap superconductivity (TGS) with $s+d-$wave character in ...

YBaCuO_7 is a trilayer material with a unit cell consisting of a CuO_2 bilayer with a CuO plane of chains in between. Starting with a model of isolated planes coupled through a transverse matrix element, we consider the possibility of intra as well as interplane pairing within a nearly antiferromagnetic Fermi liquid model. Solutions of a set of three coupled BCS equations for the gap exhibit orthorhombic symmetry with s- as well as d-wave contributions. The temperature depend...
