The extended Hubbard model can host s-wave, d-wave and p-wave superconducting phases depending on the values of the on-site and nearest-neighbour interactions. Upon detailed examination of the free energy functional of the gap in this model, we show that these symmetries are often dependent on temperature. The critical points of this functional are constrained by symmetry and allow us to formulate stringent conditions on the temperature profile of the gap function, applicable...

A microscopic theory of superconductivity in the extended Hubbard model which takes into account the intersite Coulomb repulsion and electron-phonon interaction is developed in the limit of strong correlations. The Dyson equation for normal and pair Green functions expressed in terms of the Hubbard operators is derived. The self-energy is obtained in the noncrossing approximation. In the normal state, antiferromagnetic short-range correlations result in the electronic spectru...

We have studied the extended Hubbard model in the atomic limit. The Hamiltonian analyzed consists of the effective on-site interaction U and the intersite density-density interactions Wij (both: nearest-neighbour and next-nearest-neighbour). The model can be considered as a simple effective model of charge ordered insulators. The phase diagrams and thermodynamic properties of this system have been determined within the variational approach, which treats the on-site interactio...

In this paper, we examine how next-nearest neighbor hopping and interaction affect pair properties, concluding that small and light (superlight) pairs are ubiquitous in dilute extended Hubbard models with next-nearest neighbor interactions and hopping. We are motivated by two unconventional superconductors, the cuprates and fullerides, which are expected to have next-nearest neighbor hopping and interactions. We determine pair properties for a dilute extended Hubbard model wi...

A systematic diagrammatic expansion for Gutzwiller-wave functions (DE-GWF) is formulated and used for the description of superconducting (SC) ground state in the two-dimensional Hubbard model with electron-transfer amplitudes t (and t') between nearest (and next-nearest) neighbors. The method is numerically very efficient and allows for a detailed analysis of the phase diagram as a function of all relevant parameters (U, \delta, t') and a determination of the kinetic-energy d...

We study the phase diagram of the extended Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice, including on-site (U) and nearest-neighbor (V) interactions, at weak couplings. We show that the charge-density-wave phase that is known to occur at half-filling when 4V > U gives way to a d_{xy} -wave superconducting instability away from half-filling, when the Fermi surface is not perfectly nested, and for sufficiently large repulsive and a range of on-site repulsive interaction. I...

A combination of analytical approaches and quantum Monte Carlo simulations is used to study both magnetic and pairing correlations for a version of the Hubbard model that includes second-neighbor hopping $t^{\prime }=-0.35t$ as a model for high-temperature superconductors. Magnetic properties are analyzed using the Two-Particle Self-Consistent approach. The maximum in magnetic susceptibility as a function of doping appears both at finite $% t^{\prime }$ and at $t^{\prime }=0$...

We show in a mean-field calculation that phase diagrams remarkably similar to those recently proposed for the cuprates arise in simple microscopic models of interacting electrons near half-filling. The models are extended Hubbard models with nearest neighbor interaction and correlated hopping. The underdoped region of the phase diagram features $d_{{x^2}-{y^2}}$ density-wave (DDW) order. In a certain regime of temperature and doping, DDW order coexists with antiferromagnetic ...

We study an extended Hubbard model with on-site repulsion and nearest neighbors attraction which tries to mimic some of the experimental features of doped cuprates in the superconducting state. We draw and discuss the phase diagram as a function of the effective interactions among electrons for a wide range of doping concentrations. We locate the region which is relevant for the cuprates setting some constraints on the parameters which may be used in this kind of effective mo...

We present studies of the atomic limit of the extended Hubbard model with pair hopping for arbitrary electron density and arbitrary chemical potential. The Hamiltonian consists of (i) the effective on-site interaction $U$ and (ii) the intersite charge exchange term $I$, determining the hopping of electron pairs between nearest-neighbour sites. In the analysis of the phase diagrams and thermodynamic properties of this model we treat the intersite interactions within the mean-f...
