We report a detailed study of the specific heat and magnetic susceptibility of single crystals of a spin liquid candidate: the hyper-honeycomb Cu oxalate framework compound [(C$_2$H$_5$)$_3$NH]$_2$Cu$_2$(C$_2$O$_4$)$_3$. The specific heat shows no anomaly associated with a magnetic transition at low temperatures down to $T\sim$ 180 mK in zero magnetic field. We observe a large linear-in-$T$ contribution to the specific heat $\gamma T$, $\gamma = 98(1)$ mK/mol K$^{2}$, at low ...

From experimental and theoretical analyses of magnetic and specific-heat properties, we present the complete magnetic phase diagram of the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet Cu(N$_2$H$_5$)$_2$(SO$_4$)$_2$. On cooling and at zero magnetic field this compound enters a one-dimensional regime with short-range magnetic correlations, marked by a broad maximum in the specific heat and magnetic susceptibility at $T_\mathrm{max}\sim 2\,\mathrm{K}$, followed by an ordered antiferrom...

We examine the magnetic field dependent excitations of the dimerized spin-1/2 chain, copper nitrate, with antiferromagnetic intra-dimer exchange $J_1=0.44$ meV and exchange alternation $\alpha=J_2/J_1=0.24$. Magnetic excitations in three distinct regimes of magnetization are probed through inelastic neutron scattering at low temperatures. At low and high fields there are three and two long-lived magnon-like modes, respectively. The number of modes and the anti-phase relations...

We report on the unexpected uniform spin chain physics in CuNCN, the insulating nitride analog of copper oxides. Based on full-potential band structure calculations, we derive the relevant microscopic parameters, estimate individual exchange couplings, and establish a realistic spin model of this compound. The structure of CuNCN contains chains of edge-sharing CuN(4) squares. As a surprise, in contrast to analogous [CuO(2)] chains in "edge-sharing" cuprates, the leading magne...

Although (CH3)2NH2CuCl3 (MCCL) was first examined in the 1930's [1], there are open questions regarding the magnetic dimensionality and nature of the magnetic properties. MCCL is proposed to be a S=1/2 alternating ferromagnetic antiferromagnetic spin chain alternating along the crystalline a-axis [2,3]. Proposed ferromagnetic (JFM =1.3 meV) and antiferromagnetic (JAFM =1.1 meV) exchange constants make this system particularly interesting for experimental study. Because JFM an...

Low-dimensional magnetic materials with spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ moments can host a range of exotic magnetic phenomena due to the intrinsic importance of quantum fluctuations to their behavior. Here, we report the structure, magnetic structure and magnetic properties of copper(II) thiocyanate, Cu(NCS)$_2$, a one-dimensional coordination polymer which displays low-dimensional quantum magnetism. Magnetic susceptibility, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, $^{13}$C mag...

We have investigated the magnetic properties of CuNCN, the first nitrogen-based analogue of cupric oxide, CuO. Our muon spin relaxation, nuclear magnetic resonance and electron spin resonance studies reveal that classical magnetic ordering is absent down to lowest temperatures. However, large enhancement of spin correlations and unexpected inhomogeneous magnetism have been observed below 80 K. We attribute this to a peculiar fragility of the electronic state against weak pert...

Pulsed-field magnetization experiments (fields $B$ of up to 85 T and temperatures $T$ down to 0.4 K) are reported on nine organic Cu-based two-dimensional (2D) Heisenberg magnets. All compounds show a low-$T$ magnetization that is concave as a function of $B$, with a sharp ``elbow'' transition to a constant value at a field $B_{\rm c}$. Monte-Carlo simulations including a finite interlayer exchange energy $J_{\perp}$ quantitatively reproduce the data; the concavity indicates ...

We study the magnetization of a Heisenberg spin ladder using exact diagonalization techniques, finding three distinct magnetic phases. We consider the results in relation to the experimental behaviour of the new copper compound Cu_2(C_5H_{12}N_2)_2Cl_4 and deduce that the compound is well described by such a model with a ratio of `chain' to `rung' bond strengths (J/J^\prime) of the order of 0.2, consistent with results from the magnetic susceptibility. The effects of temperat...

We report on the microscopic model of the recently synthesized one-dimensional quantum magnet (NO)Cu(NO3)3. Applying density functional theory band structure calculations, we obtain a leading antiferromagnetic exchange coupling J ~ 200 K, which runs via NO3 groups forming spin chains along the b direction. Much weaker couplings J' ~ 2 K link the chains into layers in a non-frustrated manner. Our calculations do not support the earlier conjecture on an anisotropic frustrated s...
