We discuss different aspects of the quark mass dependence of the chiral and deconfinement transitions. We make predictions for locating the deconfining critical point, by analyzing the $m_q$ dependence of the ratio of imaginary and real mass of the Polyakov loop. We then present an effective theory that allows the extraction of coupling constants from available lattice data for the temperature dependence of the chiral and Polyakov loop condensates at different quark masses.

We examine the statistical mechanics of a 1-dimensional gas of both adjoint and fundamental representation quarks which interact with each other through 1+1-dimensional U(N) gauge fields. Using large-N expansion we show that, when the density of fundamental quarks is small, there is a first order phase transition at a critical temperature and adjoint quark density which can be interpreted as deconfinement. When the fundamental quark density is comparable to the adjoint quark ...

We study the end point of the first-order deconfinement phase transition in two and 2+1 flavor QCD in the heavy quark region of the quark mass parameter space. We determine the location of critical point at which the first-order deconfinement phase transition changes to crossover, and calculate the pseudo-scalar meson mass at the critical point. Performing quenched QCD simulations on lattices with the temporal extents Nt=6 and 8, the effects of heavy quarks are determined usi...

The phase structure of QCD with various number of flavors is studied for Wilson quarks. For the case of $N_F=3$ we find that the finite temperature deconfining transition is of first order in the chiral limit on an $N_t=4$ lattice. Together with our previous results that the deconfining transition in the chiral limit is continuous for $N_F=2$ and is first order for $N_F=6$, the order of the transition is found to be consistent with a prediction of universality. The case of $S...

While the Polyakov loop is an order parameter of the deconfinement transition in the heavy quark mass regime of QCD, its sensitivity to the deconfinement of light, dynamical quarks in QCD is not apparent. On the other hand, the quark mass dependence of the Polyakov loop is sensitive to the appearance of a chiral phase transition. Using lattice QCD calculations in the staggered fermion discretization scheme at finite values of the lattice spacing, $aT = 1/8$, we show here, for...

We present results for the chiral and deconfinement transition of two flavor QCD at finite temperature and chemical potential. To this end we study the quark condensate and its dual, the dressed Polyakov loop, with functional methods using a set of Dyson-Schwinger equations. The quark-propagator is determined self-consistently within a truncation scheme including temperature and in-medium effects of the gluon propagator. For the chiral transition we find a crossover turning i...

The Polyakov loop is an order parameter to the confinement-deconfinement phase transition in pure gluodynamics. Recently a simple phenomenological model has been proposed to describe the available lattice data for the renormalized Polyakov loop in the deconfinement phase (hep-ph/0505215). These data exhibit unequivocal inverse power temperature corrections driven by a dimension two gluon condensate. The heavy quark free energy is also studied and compared to lattice data.

We study the deconfinement transition in two-flavour lattice QCD with dynamical overlap fermions. Our simulations have been carried out on a $16^3 \times 6$ lattice at a pion mass around 500 MeV with a special HMC algorithm without any approximation such as fixed topology. We consider several temperatures from 220 MeV which is close to the deconfinement to 280 MeV which is above it. The dependence of the Polyakov loop, the chiral condensate, the Dirac spectra and the connecte...

We give an analytical derivation of the confinement/deconfinement phase transition at finite temperature in the $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory in the $D$-dimensional space time for $D>2$. For this purpose, we use a novel reformulation of the Yang-Mills theory which allows the gauge-invariant gluonic mass term, and calculate analytically the effective potential of the Polyakov loop average concretely for the $SU(2)$ and $SU(3)$ Yang-Mills theories by including the gauge-invariant d...

We study the interpretation of Lattice data about the thermodynamics of the deconfinement phase of SU(3) Yang-Mills theory, in terms of gluon quasiparticles propagating in a background of a Polyakov loop. A potential for the Polyakov loop, inspired by the strong coupling expansion of the QCD action, is introduced; the Polyakov loop is coupled to tranverse gluon quasiparticles by means of a gas-like effective potential. This study is useful to identify the effective degrees of...
