We study the deconfining phase transition in 3+1 dimensional pure SU(N) Yang-Mills theory using a gauge invariant variational calculation. We generalize the variational ansatz of Phys. Rev. D52, 3719 (1995) to mixed states (density matrices) and minimize the free energy. For N > 3 we find a first order phase transition with the transition temperature of T_C = 450 Mev. Below the critical temperature the Polyakov loop has vanishing expectation value, while above T_C, its averag...

We investigate the deconfining phase transition in SU(3) pure gauge theory and in full QCD with two flavors of staggered fermions by means of a gauge invariant thermal partition functional. In the pure gauge case our finite size scaling analysis is in agreement with the well known weak first order phase transition. In the case of 2 flavors full QCD we find that the phase transition is consistent with weak first order, contrary to the expectation of a crossover for not too lar...

The deconfinement phase transition at high baryon densities and low temperatures evades a direct investigation by means of lattice gauge calculations. In order to make this regime of QCD accessible by computer simulations, two proposal are made: (i) A Lattice Effective Theory (LET) is designed which incorporates gluon and diquark fields. The deconfinement transition takes place when the diquark fields undergo Bose-Einstein condensation. (ii) Rather than using eigenstates of t...

The deconfinement transition in SU(4) lattice gauge theory is investigated on N_s^3 X N_t lattices for N_s = 8-16 and N_t = 4-8 using a modified Wilson action which is expected to be free of any bulk transitions. The susceptibility chi_{|L|}^{max}, where L is the order parameter for deconfinement, is found to increase linearly with spatial volume for N_t = 4, 5, and 6, indicating a first order deconfinement phase transition. The latent heat of the transition is estimated to b...

We investigate the deconfinement transition of static quarks in SU(N) Yang-Mills theories using a perturbative approach based on a massive extension of the Landau-DeWitt gauge-fixed action, where the gluon mass term is related to the issue of Gribov ambiguities. A leading-order, one-loop calculation of the effective potential for the Polyakov loop produces a deconfinement transition of second order for the SU(2) theory and of first order for SU(3) with transition temperatures...

We consider QCD with two degenerate flavors of light quarks(up and down) at asymptotically high isospin chemical potential with zero baryon chemical potential and calculate for the first time a quantitative expression for the critical temperature of the deconfinement transition in this regime. At high isospin chemical potential and sufficiently low temperatures this theory becomes equivalent to a pure Yang-Mills theory and accordingly has a first order deconfinement phase tra...

The techniques are discussed by which the order of the deconfining phase transition is investigated on the lattice. QCD with $N_f=2$ is a special case, which can provide information on the mechanism of confinement.

We describe how the coupling of the gluonic Polyakov loop to quarks solves different inconsistencies in the standard treatment of chiral quark models at finite temperature at the one quark loop level. Large gauge invariance is incorporated and an effective theory of quarks and Polyakov loops as basic degrees of freedom is generated. From this analysis we find a strong suppression of finite temperature effects in hadronic observables below the deconfinement phase transition tr...

We discuss recent results for the phase transition in finite-temperature QCD from numerical (Monte Carlo) simulations of the lattice-regularized theory. Emphasis is given to the case of two degenerate light-quark flavors. The order of the transition in this case, which could have cosmological implications, has not yet been established.

We investigate the Polyakov loop effects on the QCD phase diagram by using the strong-coupling (1/g^2) expansion of the lattice QCD (SC-LQCD) with one species of unrooted staggered quark, including O}(1/g^4) effects. We take account of the effects of Polyakov loop fluctuations in Weiss mean-field approximation (MFA), and compare the results with those in the Haar-measure MFA (no fluctuation from the mean-field). The Polyakov loops strongly suppress the chiral transition tempe...
