We use a semi-classical approximation to investigate the effects of color transparency on pion electroproduction reactions. The resulting reduced nuclear interactions produce significant, but not dominating, differences with the results of conventional distorted-wave, Glauber-type treatments at kinematics accessible to Jefferson Laboratory. Nuclear effects that could mimic the influence of color transparency are also discussed.

The A-dependence of the quasielastic A(e,e'p) reaction has been studied at SLAC with H-2, C, Fe, and Au nuclei at momentum transfers Q^2 = 1, 3, 5, and 6.8 (GeV/c)^2. We extract the nuclear transparency T(A,Q^2), a measure of the average probability that the struck proton escapes from the nucleus A without interaction. Several calculations predict a significant increase in T with momentum transfer, a phenomenon known as Color Transparency. No significant rise within errors is...

We introduce a data analysis procedure for color transparency experiments which is considerably less model dependent than the transparency ratio method. The new method is based on fitting the shape of the A dependence of the nuclear cross section at fixed momentum transfer to determine the effective attenuation cross section for hadrons propagating through the nucleus. The procedure does not require assumptions about the hard scattering rate inside the nuclear medium. Instead...

We have studied the diffractive dissociation into di-jets of 500 GeV/c pions scattering coherently from carbon and platinum targets. Extrapolating to asymptotically high energies (where t_{min} approaches 0) we find that when the per-nucleus cross-section for this process is parameterized as $\sigma = \sigma_0 A^{\alpha}, \alpha$ has values near 1.6, the exact result depending on jet transverse momentum. These values are in agreement with those predicted by theoretical calcul...

This dissertation explores two main topics: 1) Color Transparency and quasi-elastic knockout reactions involving pions and $\rho$ mesons; and 2) determination of the $J/\psi$-nucleon scattering amplitude and scattering length via $J/\psi$ electroproduction on the deuteron. It is shown that at the energies available at the COMPASS experiment at CERN, Color Transparency should be detectable in the reaction $\pi+A\to \pi+p+(A-1)^*$ (proton knockout). It is also shown that Color ...

Color Transparency refers to the vanishing of the hadron-nucleon interaction for hadrons produced inside a nucleus in high momentum exclusive processes. We briefly review the concept behind this unique Quantum Chromo Dynamics' phenomenon, the experimental search for its onset and the recent progress made at intermediate energies.

We have measured the nuclear transparency of the incoherent diffractive $A(e,e'\rho^0)$ process in $^{12}$C and $^{56}$Fe targets relative to $^2$H using a 5 GeV electron beam. The nuclear transparency, the ratio of the produced $\rho^0$'s on a nucleus relative to deuterium, which is sensitive to $\rho A$ interaction, was studied as function of the coherence length ($l_c$), a lifetime of the hadronic fluctuation of the virtual photon, and the four-momentum transfer squared ($...

As one of the predictions of perturbative QCD, the effect of color transparency has been the focus of attention in the community studying modifications of hadrons in nuclear medium for several decades. The search for this effect in reactions involving heavy nuclei can be complicated by uncertainties in nuclear characteristics (nucleon density distributions and wave functions), which can affect the interpretation of experiments. In this work, we consider the reaction $d(p,pp)n...

Suppression of Hadroproduction in Nuclei

We argue that nuclei are not transparent for fast projectile partons. Color transparency is effective for final state interactions in heavy particle production, though nuclear filtering of initial partons can reduce the cross sections. We show that short-ranged initial state interactions, which have been neglected so far, can be important in hadroproduction on nuclei. With the present scenario of hadroproduction a qualitative description of data can be obtained.

If the effects of color transparency are included, $T$ shows significant variation with $t$ even f...
