We analyze the Scherk-Schwarz (SS) supersymmetry breaking in brane-world five dimensional theories compactified on the orbifold $S^1/\mathbb{Z}_2$. The SS breaking parameter is undetermined at the tree-level (no-scale supergravity) and can be interpreted as the Hosotani vacuum expectation value corresponding to the $U(1)_R$ group in five dimensional N=2 (ungauged) supergravity. We show that the SS breaking parameter is fixed at the loop level to either 0 or 1/2 depending on t...

We analyze the ultraviolet stability of the Higgs mass in recently proposed Kaluza-Klein models compactified on S_1/Z_2 or S_1/(Z_2\times Z_2'), both at the field theory and string theory level. Fayet-Iliopoulos terms of U(1) hypercharge are shown to be of vital importance for this discussion. Models with a single Higgs doublet seem to be generically affected by quadratic divergences.

We examine the Higgs mass parameters and electroweak symmetry breaking in supersymmetric orbifold field theories in which the 4-dimensional Higgs fields originate from higher-dimensional gauge supermultiplets. It is noted that such gauge-Higgs unification leads to a specific boundary condition on the Higgs mass parameters at the compactification scale, which is independent of the details of supersymmetry breaking mechanism. With this boundary condition, phenomenologically via...

We reconsider the phenomenon of mass generation via coordinate-dependent compatifications of higher-dimensional theories on orbifolds. For definiteness, we study a generic five-dimensional (5D) theory compactified on S^1/Z_2. We show that the presence of fixed points, where the fields or their derivatives may be discontinuous, permits new realizations of the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism where, for example, the mass terms are localized at the orbifold fixed points. Our technique c...

We discuss Kaluza-Klein (KK) decomposition in 5-dimensional (5D) field theories with orbifold compactification. Kinetic terms localized at orbifold fixed points, which are inevitably present in any realistic model, modify the standard KK mass spectrum and interactions of KK modes. This, in turn, can significantly affect phenomenology of the orbifold models. As an example, we discuss gauge coupling unification in N=1 supersymmetric 5D orbifold SU(5) model. We have found that u...

In orbifold compactifications on T^2/Z_2 with Scherk-Schwarz supersymmetry breaking, it is shown that (brane-localised) superpotential interactions and (bulk) gauge interactions generate at one-loop higher derivative counterterms to the mass of the brane (or zero-mode of the bulk) scalar field. These brane-localised operators are generated by integrating out the bulk modes of the initial theory which, although supersymmetric, is nevertheless non-renormalisable. It is argued t...

The upper limit on the mass of the lightest CP-even neutral Higgs in the minimal supersymmetric standard model is around 135 GeV for soft supersymmetry breaking masses in the 1 TeV range. We demonstrate that this upper limit may be sizably relaxed if supersymmetry is embedded in extra dimensions. We calculate, using the effective potential technique, the radiative corrections to the lightest Higgs mass induced by the Kaluza-Klein towers of quarks and squarks with one and two ...

We propose a mechanism of Higgsless gauge symmetry breaking with a large mass hierarchy. We consider a 5D gauge theory on an orbifold $S^1/Z_2$. The gauge symmetry is broken by orbifolding and also nontrivial boundary conditions at fixed points. All 4D modes which survive at low energies are found to be localized around fixed points. Supersymmetry plays an important role in our mechanism. The tree-level unitarity in our model is briefly discussed.

The ultra-violet behavior of Kaluza-Klein theories on a one dimensional orbifold is discussed. An extension of dimensional regularization that can be applied to a compact dimension is presented. Using this, the FI-tadpole is calculated in the effective KK theory resulting from compactifying supersymmetric theories in 5 dimensions.

We consider Z_2-symmetric braneworlds arising from 5-sphere compactifications with 5-form flux in type IIB supergravity. This Kaluza-Klein reduction produces a D=5 theory which supports 1/2-supersymmetric Z_2-symmetric domain-wall solutions. However, upon lifting such solutions back to D=10, one finds that supersymmetry is broken by 5-sphere Kaluza-Klein effects. This happens owing to the action on the Killing spinor of the Z_2 \subset SO(1,9) symmetry, which requires an orie...
