Recent results on inclusive and exclusive electroproduction experiments at Jefferson Lab are discussed. They include measurements of the spin responses for protons and neutrons in and above the resonance region, exclusive single and double pion production to measure resonance transition multipoles, and searches for predicted yet unobserved quark model states. A brief outlook into the new domain of generalized parton distribution is given as well.

An approach for relating the nucleon resonances extracted from $\pi N$ reaction data to lattice QCD calculations has been developed by using the finite-volume Hamiltonian method. Within models of $\pi N$ reactions, bare states are introduced to parametrize the intrinsic excitations of the nucleon. We show that the resonance pole positions can be related to the probability $P_{N^*}(E)$ of finding the bare state, $N^*$, in the $\pi N$ scattering states in infinite volume. We fu...

We briefly recall the main physical features of the parton distributions in the quantum statistical picture of the nucleon. Some predictions from a next-to-leading order QCD analysis are compared to recent experimental results.

The results on the photo- and electroexcitation amplitudes of most nucleon resonances in the mass range up to 2.0 GeV determined from the CLAS experimental data on exclusive $\pi^+\pi^-p$ photo-/electroproduction off protons in collaboration between the Jefferson Lab and Moscow State University are presented. The first and only available results on electroexcitation amplitudes from CLAS in a wide range of photon virtualities $Q^2$ $<$ 5.0 GeV$^2$ revealed the nucleon resonanc...

This paper attempts to summarise the highlights of the talks presented in Parallel Session II of the SPIN 2004 Symposium dedicated to the QCD spin structure of nucleons. Emphasis is put on new data and theoretical developments.

We review a global analysis of meson production reactions off the nucleons by a collaboration at Excited Baryon Analysis Center of Jefferson Lab. The analysis is pursued with a dynamical coupled-channels approach, within which the dynamics of multi-channel reaction processes are taken into account in a fully consistent way with the two-body as well as three-body unitarity of the S-matrix. With this approach, new features of nucleon excitations are revealed as resonant particl...

This talk reviews recent developments in the use of large $N_c$ QCD in the description of baryonic resonances. The emphasis is on the model-independent nature of the approach. Key issues discussed include the spin-flavor symmetry which emerges at large $N_c$ and the direct use of scattering observables. The connection to quark model approaches is stressed.
