Isospin and flavor SU(3) set stringent bounds on penguin pollution in $B^0(t)\to \rho^+\rho^-$, providing a theoretically precise determination of $\alpha\equiv \phi_2 $, $\alpha = (91\pm 7_{\rm exp}\pm 3_{\rm th})^\circ$. Isospin breaking in a sum rule for $B\to K\pi$ rates is shown to be suppressed. A similar sum rule holds for CP asymmetries in $B\to K\pi$. Violation of these sum rules would be evidence for an anomalous $\Delta I=1$ piece in ${\cal H}_{\rm eff}$.

We present the most complete analysis of the penguin correction to the extraction of the standard-model parameter sin(2\phi_1) from the B^0 -> J/psi K_S decay up to leading power in 1/m_b and to next-to-leading order in \alpha_s, \phi_1 being the weak phase, m_b the b quark mass, and \alpha_s the strong coupling constant. The deviation \Delta S_{J/psi K_S} of the mixing-induced CP asymmetry from sin(2\phi_1) and the direct CP asymmetry A_{J/psi K_S} are both found to be of O(...

We discuss the correlations of charming penguin contributions to $B\to\pi\pi$, $\pi K$ and KK using approximate flavor SU(3) symmetry. Strong constraints are found from the direct CP asymmetries especially in $\pi K$ modes. We make a global fit to the latest data and find that only a small charming penguin is allowed, and the size of color-suppressed tree amplitude (C) relative to tree amplitudes (T) remains large $C/T\simeq0.6$, which disfavors the possibility of a large cha...

By using the recent experimental measurements of B to pi pi and B to K pi branching ratios, we find that factorization is unable to reproduce the observed BRs even taking into account the uncertainties of the input parameters. Charming and GIM penguins allow to reconcile the theoretical predictions with the data. Because of these large effects, we conclude, however, that it is not possible, with the present theoretical and experimental accuracy, to determine the CP violation ...

We present strategies for determining electroweak penguins from experimental data. Using the CKM-angle $\gamma$ as one of our central inputs and making some reasonable approximations, we show that the $\bar b\to\bar s$ electroweak penguin amplitude can be determined in a two-step procedure involving i) BR$(B^+\to\pi^0K^+)$, BR$(B^-\to\pi^0K^-)$, BR$(B^+\to\pi^+K^0)$ and ii) either BR$(B^0_d\to\pi^-K^+)$, BR$(\bar B^0_d\to\pi^+K^-)$ or $\acp(t)$ of the mode $B_s\to K^+K^-$. Th...

A major problem in the determination of the the CP angle $\alpha$, that should be measured through modes of the type $B_d, \bar{B}_d \to \pi \pi , \cdots ,$ is the uncertainty coming from Penguin diagrams. We consider the different ground state modes $\pi \pi$, $\pi \rho$, $\rho \rho$, and, assuming the FSI phases to be negligible, we investigate the amount of uncertainty coming from Penguins that can be parametrized by a dilution factor $D$ and an angle shift $\Delta \alpha$...

For about twenty years, $B\to\pi K$ decays are in the focus of $B$-decay studies. We show that a correlation between the CP asymmetries of $B^0_d\to\pi^0K_{\rm S}$ reveals a tension with the Standard Model. Should it be due to New Physics, a modified electroweak penguin sector provides particularly interesting possibilities. We present a new method to determine the electroweak penguin parameters, which uses an isospin relation and requires only minimal $SU(3)$ input. We apply...

Time-dependent CP violation is measured in the $B^0\rightarrow J/\psi\pi^+\pi^-$ channel for each $\pi^+\pi^-$ resonant final state using data collected with an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ in $pp$ collisions using the LHCb detector. The final state with the largest rate, $J/\psi\rho^0(770)$, is used to measure the CP-violating angle $2\beta^{\rm eff}$ to be $(41.7\pm 9.6_{-6.3}^{+2.8})^{\circ}$. This result can be used to limit the size of penguin amplitude contrib...

Performing a fit to the available experimental data, we quantify the effect of long-distance contributions from penguin contractions in B^0 to J/psi K^0 decays. We estimate the deviation of the measured S_CP term of the time-dependent CP asymmetry from sin(2 beta) induced by these contributions and by the penguin operators. We find Delta S = 0.000 +- 0.012 ([-0.025,0.024] @ 95% probability).

We calculate CP-violating rates and asymmetry parameters in charged and neutral $B\to \pi\pi, \pi K$ and $\bar K K$ decays arising from the interference of tree and penguin (strong and electroweak) amplitudes with different strong and CKM phases. The perturbative strong (electroweak) phases develop at order $\alpha_s$ ($\alpha_{em}$) from absorptive parts of one-loop matrix elements of the next-to-leading (leading) logarithm corrected effective Hamiltonian. The BSW model is u...
