We briefly review the formulation of chiral quark soliton model and explain the difference and similarities with the Skyrme model. Next, we apply the model to calculate non-exotic and exotic mass spectra. We concentrate on large $N_{c}$ counting both for mass splittings and decay widths. It is shown that pure large $N_{c}$ arguments do not explain the small width of exotic pentaquark states.

We give a comprehensive review of concepts and numerical calculations for SU(2) and SU(3) baryonic systems which are considered as many body systems composed of three quarks coupled to a polarized Dirac sea by a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio like interaction. The general formalism as well as the construction and numerical solution of non-topological mean field solitons are exhibited. Systems with good spin/flavour/isospin/momentum quantum numbers are obtained by using the SU(2)/SU(3)-c...

This lecture provides a pedagogical instruction to the basic concepts of the Skyrme model and its some applications. As the preliminary for understanding the Skyrme model, we first briefly explain the large $N_c$ expansion, chiral symmetry and its breaking. Next we give a brief review of nonlinear sigma model including the power counting scheme of the chiral perturbation theory, starting from the linear sigma model. We then give an exhaust explanation of the Skyrme model and ...

In the large $N_c$ limit of QCD, baryons can be modeled as solitons, for instance, as Skyrmions. This modeling has been justified by Witten's demonstration that all properties of baryons and mesons scale with $N_c^{-1/2}$ in the same way as the analogous meson-based soliton model scales with a generic meson-meson coupling constant $g$. An alternative large $N_c$ limit (the orientifold large $N_c$ limit) has recently been proposed in which quarks transform in the two-index ant...

The Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model (NJL) is extended to incorporate heavy quark spin-symmetry. In this model baryons containing one heavy quark are analyzed as bound-states of light baryons, represented as chiral solitons, and mesons containing one heavy quark. From related studies in Skyrme type models, the ground-state heavy baryon is known to arise for the heavy meson in a P--wave configuration. In the limit of an infinitely large quark mass the heavy meson wave-function is sha...

This paper is a PhD thesis defended at Institute of Theoretical Physics and Astronomy on 18 December, 1998. The following (abbreviated) statements represent the main results of the work: 1.Each of SU(2) representation j yields the different quantum Lagrangian density. As a consequence, theoretical observables depend on representation j which can be treated as a new phenomenological parameter. 2.Quantum chiral solitons exist and possess asymptotic behaviour consistent with t...

In this paper we investigate an SU(3) extension of the chiral quark-meson model. The spectra of baryons with strangeness, charm and bottom are considered within a "rigid oscillator" version of this model. The similarity between the quark part of the Lagrangian in the model and the Wess-Zumino term in the Skyrme model is noted. The binding energies of baryonic systems with baryon number B=2 and 3 possessing strangeness or heavy flavor are estimated. The results obtained are in...

From the interpretation of the $\Theta^+(1540)$ and $\Xi_{3/2}(1862)$ baryons as an excitation of the ``skyrmion liquid'' with SU(3) flavour symmetry $\bar{10}$ we deduce a new series of baryons, $\Theta_1^{++}$, $\Theta_1^{+}$ and $\Theta_1^0$, situated at the top of the 27-plet of SU(3) flavour, with hypercharge Y=2, isospin I=1 and spin $J=\frac32$. The $\Theta_1$ mass and width are estimated from the chiral quark soliton model. We demonstrate that the predicted mass, $m_{...

The description of baryons as chiral solitons of the Nambu--Jona--Lasinio (NJL) model is reviewed. A motivation for the soliton description of baryons is provided from large $N_C$ QCD. Rigorous results on the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry in QCD are discussed. It is then argued that the NJL model provides a fair description of low--energy hadron physics. The NJL model is therefore employed to mimic the low--energy chiral flavor dynamics of QCD. The model is bosonize...

We calculate the magnetic moments of heavy baryons in the Skyrme model in the limit of infinite heavy quark mass. We show that the Skyrme model yields the same limit as the nonrelativistic quark model when heavy vector mesons are treated properly. The essential role of the magnetic moment coupling terms in the electromagnetic interactions of heavy mesons is discussed.
