Measurements of CP violation in $B^0_d\to J/\psi K_{\rm S}^0$ and $B^0_s\to J/\psi \phi$ decays play key roles in testing the quark-flavour sector of the Standard Model. The theoretical interpretation of the corresponding observables is limited by uncertainties from doubly Cabibbo-suppressed penguin topologies. With continuously increasing experimental precision, it is mandatory to get a handle on these contributions, which cannot be calculated reliably in QCD. In the case of...

We investigate a class of models for new physics which could produce a large difference in sin 2 beta between B0-> J/\psi K(S) and the ``pure penguin'' mode B0-> phi K(S). In such models, the dominant effect is through a Z-penguin and therefore a pattern of deviation in sin 2beta as measured in B0-> chi(1) K(S); eta(c) K(S); J/\psi K(S) and psi-prime K(S) is predicted. If the preliminary data concerning the discrepancy between J/\psi K(S) and phi K(S) proves correct in magnit...

The LHCb collaboration has recently reported the first observation of CP violation in the penguin-dominated $B^0_s\to K^-K^+$ decay and further new measurements, indicating differences between the direct CP asymmetries of both the $B^0_s\to K^-K^+$, $B^0_d\to\pi^-K^+$ and the $B^0_d\to \pi^-\pi^+$, $B^0_s\to K^-\pi^+$ modes. We show that these puzzling differences can be accommodated through sizeable penguin annihilation and exchange topologies in the Standard Model, and cons...

The $U$-spin symmetry provides a powerful tool to extract the angle $\gamma$ of the Unitarity Triangle and the $B_s^0$-$\bar{B}_s^0$ mixing phase $\phi_s$ from CP violation in the $B^0_s\to K^-K^+$, $B^0_d\to\pi^-\pi^+$ system. LHCb has obtained first results with uncertainties at the $7^\circ$ level. Due to $U$-spin-breaking corrections, it will be challenging to reduce the uncertainty below ${\cal O}(5^\circ)$ at Belle II and the LHCb upgrade. We propose a new strategy, usi...

In the Standard Model (SM) charmless hadronic decays $B_s^0 \rightarrow \eta^\prime \eta$ proceed via tree-level $b\to u$ and penguin $b\to s$ transitions. Penguin transitions are sensitive to Beyond-the-Standard-Model (BSM) physics scenarios and could affect the branching fractions and {\it CP} asymmetries in such decays. Once branching fractions for two-body decays $B_s \to \eta\eta, \eta\eta^{\prime}, \eta^{\prime}\eta^{\prime} $ are measured, and the theoretical uncertain...

A brief review of the strategies used in looking for CP violation in B decays is presented. Some problems due to penguin diagrams are addressed. Penguin trapping is discussed, in the context of the upcoming experiments. The high rates and the possibility to perform experiments on the $B_s$ system justify the interest in hadronic colliders.

A brief review of CP violation in the $B$-meson system and of strategies to determine the angles $\alpha$, $\beta$ and $\gamma$ of the unitarity triangle of the CKM matrix is given. Both general aspects and some recent developments are discussed, including a critical look at the ``benchmark'' modes, CP violation in penguin decays, $B_s$ decays in the light of the width difference $\Delta\Gamma_s$, charged $B$ decays, and strategies to probe the CKM angle $\gamma$ with $B\to\p...

The decays $B_d^0\rightarrow D_d^-D_d^+$ and $B_s^0\rightarrow D_s^-D_s^+$ probe the CP-violating mixing phases $\phi_d$ and $\phi_s$, respectively. The theoretical uncertainty of the corresponding determinations is limited by contributions from penguin topologies, which can be included with the help of the $U$-spin symmetry of the strong interaction. We analyse the currently available data for $B^0_{d,s}\rightarrow D_{d,s}^-D_{d,s}^+$ decays and those with similar dynamics t...

We report measurements of Time-Dependent CP asymmetries in several $b\to s$ penguin dominated hadronic B decays, where New Physics contributions may appear. We find no significant discrepancies with respect to the Standard Model expectations.

For about twenty years, $B\to\pi K$ decays are in the focus of $B$-decay studies. We show that a correlation between the CP asymmetries of $B^0_d\to\pi^0K_{\rm S}$ reveals a tension with the Standard Model. Should it be due to New Physics, a modified electroweak penguin sector provides particularly interesting possibilities. We present a new method to determine the electroweak penguin parameters, which uses an isospin relation and requires only minimal $SU(3)$ input. We apply...
