We introduce an ansatz which allows us to solve the supersymmetry equations for warped N=1 AdS4 type II supergravity compactifications of general SU(3)xSU(3) structure. As a byproduct we obtain a set of necessary conditions which every supersymmetric AdS4 vacuum should obey. We analyse the most general supersymmetric solutions of D=11 supergravity consisting of a warped product of five-dimensional anti-de-Sitter space with a six-dimensional Riemannian space M_6, with four-form flux on M_6. We show that M_6 is partly specified by a one-parameter family of four-dimensional Kahler metrics. We present a family of N=1 supersymmetric backgrounds in type-IIA supergravity and their lifts to eleven-dimensional supergravity. These are of the form $AdS_5 \times X^5$ and are characterised by an $SU(2)$ structure. The internal space, $X^5$, is obtained from the known Sasaki-Einstein manifolds, $Y^{p,q}$, via an application of non-Abelian T-duality.

For the most general supersymmetric solutions of type IIB supergravity consisting of a warped product of AdS_5 with a five-dimensional manifold M_5, we construct an explicit consistent Kaluza-Klein reduction on M_5 to minimal D=5 gauged supergravity. We analyse a recently constructed class of local solutions of type IIB supergravity that consist of a warped product of AdS_3 with a seven-dimensional internal space. We consider warped AdS$_3\times $S$^2\times$M$_5$ backgrounds in type II supergravity preserving small ${\cal N}=(4,0)$ supersymmetry. We show that imposing ${\cal N}=(4,0)$ supersymmetry imposes between 0 and 3 a priori isometries in the internal M$_5$. In this work we focus on classes of solution where M$_5$ exhibits no a prioi isometry which imposes additional constraints. We find an exact type IIB supergravity solution that represents a one-parameter deformation of the T-dual of the AdS_5 x S^5 background (with T-duality applied in all 6 abelian bosonic isometric directions). We find a new $\mathcal{N}=2$ $AdS_4$ solution in M-theory supported by purely magnetic flux via a sequence of abelian and non-abelian T-dualities. This provides the second known example in this class besides the uplift of the Pernici and Sezgin solution to 7d gauged supergravity constructed in the eighties.
