It has recently been conjectured that the Anti-de Sitter space is unstable under arbitrarily small perturbations. This article (based on my plenary talk of the same title at the conference GR20 in Warsaw) briefly reviews numerical and analytical evidence supporting this conjecture, putting emphasis on weak turbulence as a driving mechanism of instability.

In this work, we provide new examples of Anti-de Sitter black holes with a planar base manifold in four-dimensional Critical Gravity by considering nonlinear electrodynamics as a matter source. We find a general solution characterized by the presence of only one integration constant where, for a suitable election of coupling constants, we can show the existence of one or more horizons. Additionally, we compute its non-null thermodynamical quantities through a variety of techn...

In this paper, we study thermodynamic features of the charged rotating accelerating black holes in anti-de Sitter spacetime. First, we consider these black holes as the thermodynamic systems and analyze thermal stability/instability through the use of heat capacity in the canonical ensemble. We also investigate the effects of angular momentum, electric charge and string tension on the thermodynamic quantities and stability of the system. Considering the known relation between...

In this paper, we analyze the thermodynamic properties of the Anti de Sitter black hole in the Einstein-Maxwell-Yang-Mills-AdS gravity (EMYM) via many approaches and in different thermodynamical ensembles (canonical/ grand canonical). First, we give a concise overview of this phase structure in the entropy-thermal diagram for fixed charges then we investigate this thermodynamical structure in fixed potentials ensemble. The Next relevant step is recalling the nonlocal observab...

We investigate the thermodynamics of spherically symmetric black hole solutions in a four-dimensional Einstein--Yang-Mills-SU(2) theory with a negative cosmological constant. Special attention is paid to configurations with a unit magnetic charge. We find that a set of Reissner-Nordstr\"om--Anti-de Sitter black holes can become unstable to forming non-Abelian hair. However, the hairy black holes are never thermodynamically favoured over the full set of abelian monopole soluti...

Conditions for thermodynamic stability of asymptotically anti-de Sitter rotating black holes in D-dimensions are determined. Local thermodynamic stability requires not only positivity conditions on the specific heat and the moment of inertia tensor but it is also necessary that the adiabatic compressibility be positive. It is shown that, in the absence of a cosmological constant, neither rotation nor charge is sufficient to ensure full local thermodynamic stability of a black...

We consider the Hamiltonian dynamics and thermodynamics of spherically symmetric Einstein-Maxwell spacetimes with a negative cosmological constant. We impose boundary conditions that enforce every classical solution to be an exterior region of a Reissner-Nordstr\"om-anti-de Sitter black hole with a nondegenerate Killing horizon, with the spacelike hypersurfaces extending from the horizon bifurcation two-sphere to the asymptotically anti-de Sitter infinity. The constraints are...

We study the dynamics of a black hole in an asymptotically $AdS_d \times S^d$ space-time in the limit of a large number of dimensions, $d \to \infty$. Such a black hole is known to become dynamically unstable below a critical radius. We derive the dispersion relation for the quasinormal mode that governs this instability in an expansion in $1/d$. We also provide a full nonlinear analysis of the instability at leading order in $1/d$. We find solutions that resemble the lumpy b...

The local and global thermal phase structure for asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes charged under an abelian gauge group, with both Gauss-Bonnet and quartic field strength corrections, is mapped out for all parameter space. We work in the grand canonical ensemble where the external electric potential is held fixed. The analysis is performed in an arbitrary number of dimensions, for all three possible horizon topologies - spherical, flat or hyperbolic. For spherical hor...

We extend the derivation of the Hawking temperature of a Schwarzschild black hole via the Heisenberg uncertainty principle to the de Sitter and anti-de Sitter spacetimes. The thermodynamics of the Schwarzschild-(anti-)de Sitter black holes is obtained from the generalized uncertainty principle of string theory and non-commutative geometry. This may explain why the thermodynamics of (anti-)de Sitter-like black holes admits a holographic description in terms of a dual quantum c...
