This is my contribution to the Festschrift honoring Stephen Hawking on his 60th birthday. Twenty-five years ago, Gibbons and Hawking laid out the semi-classical properties of de Sitter space. After a summary of their main results, I discuss some further quantum aspects that have since been understood. The largest de Sitter black hole displays an intriguing pattern of instabilities, which can render the boundary structure arbitrarily complicated. I review entropy bounds specif...

We study topological black hole solutions of the simplest quadratic gravity action and we find that two classes are allowed. The first is asymptotically flat and mimics the Reissner-Nordstr\"om solution, while the second is asymptotically de Sitter or anti-de Sitter. In both classes, the geometry of the horizon can be spherical, toroidal or hyperbolic. We focus in particular on the thermodynamical properties of the asymptotically anti-de Sitter solutions and we compute the en...

In the context of $f(R)$ gravity theories, the issue of finding static and spherically symmetric black hole solutions is addressed. Two approaches to study the existence of such solutions are considered: first, constant curvature solutions, and second, the general case (without imposing constant curvature) is also studied. Performing a perturbative expansion around the Einstein-Hilbert action, it is found that only solutions of the Schwarzschild-(Anti-) de Sitter type are pre...

We investigate thermodynamic properties of two types of asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes: black holes and singular scalar field spacetimes. We describe the possibility that thermodynamic phase transitions can transform one spacetime into another, suggesting that black holes can radiate to naked singularities.

In this paper, we discuss the possibility of the anti-evaporation of degenerate Bardeen de-Sitter black hole. We solve the perturbation equations around the Nariai space-time. The solution of one of the perturbations related to the horizon size demonstrates that horizon of such black hole is constant. The other perturbation is also found to be stable. We further study thermodynamical properties of such black holes. We observe double phase transition at the Nariai limit.

We study the thermodynamic properties of a black hole and the Hawking-Page phase transition in the asymptotically anti--de Sitter spacetime in the dilatonic Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravitation. We show how the higher-order curvature terms can influence both the thermodynamic properties and the phase transition. We evaluate both heat capacity and free energy difference to determine the local and global thermodynamic stabilities, respectively. We find that the phase tra...

In this paper we focus on the gravitational thermodynamics of the far future. Cosmological observations suggest that most matter will be diluted away by the cosmological expansion, with the rest collapsing into supermassive black holes. The likely future state of our local universe is a supermassive black hole slowly evaporating in an empty universe dominated by a positive cosmological constant. We describe some overlooked features of how the cosmological horizon responds to ...

The properties of canonical and microcanonical ensembles of a black hole with thermal radiation and the problem of black hole evaporation in 3-D are studied. In 3-D Einstein-anti-de Sitter gravity we have two relevant mass scales, $m_c=1/G$, and $m_p=(\hbar^2\Lambda/G)^{1/3}$, which are particularly relevant for the evaporation problem. It is argued that in the `weak coupling' regime $\Lambda<(\hbar G)^{-2}$, the end point of an evaporating black hole formed with an initial m...

In this paper we propose a straightforward method for understanding the thermodynamics of black holes in de Sitter space, one that will allow us to study these black holes in a way that is analogous to the anti-de Sitter case. As per usual, we formulate separate thermodynamic first laws for each horizon present in the spacetime, and study their thermodynamics as if they were independent systems characterized by their own temperature. That these systems are not entirely indepe...

We consider asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes in $d$-spacetime dimensions in the thermodynamically stable regime. We show that the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy and its leading order corrections due to thermal fluctuations can be reproduced by a weakly interacting fluid of bosons and fermions (`dual gas') in $\Delta=\alpha(d-2)+1$ spacetime dimensions, where the energy-momentum dispersion relation for the constituents of the fluid is assumed to be $\epsilon = \kappa p^\a...
