We derive an energy bound for a `baryonic' D5-brane probe in the $adS_5\times S^5$ background near the horizon of $N$ D3-branes. Configurations saturating the bound are shown to be 1/4 supersymmetric $S^5$-wrapped D5-branes, with a total Born-Infeld charge $N$. Previous results are recovered as a special case. We derive a similar energy bound for a `baryonic' M5-brane probe in the background of $N$ M5-branes. Configurations saturating the bound are again 1/4 supersymmetric an...

We construct D=11 supergravity solutions dual to the twisted field theories arising when M-theory fivebranes wrap supersymmetric cycles. The cases considered are M-fivebranes wrapped on (i) a complex Lagrangian four-cycle in a D=8 hyper-Kaehler manifold corresponding to a D=2 field theory with (2,1) supersymmetry (ii) a product of two holomorphic two-cycles in a product of two Calabi-Yau two-folds corresponding to a D=2 field theory with (2,2) supersymmetry and (iii) a produc...

We describe how to construct solutions to 11-dimensional supergravity corresponding to M5-branes wrapped on holomorphic 2-cycles embedded in C^3. These solutions preserve N=1 supersymmetry in four dimensions. In the near-horizon limit they are expected to be dual to N=1 large N gauge theories in four dimensions by Maldacena's duality.

The M5-Brane Elliptic Genus: Modularity and BPS States

The modified elliptic genus for an M5-brane wrapped on a four-cycle of a Calabi-Yau threefold encodes the degeneracies of an infinite set of BPS states in four dimensions. By holomorphy and modular invariance, it can be determined completely from the knowledge of a finite set of such BPS states. We show the feasibility of such a computation and determine the exact modified elliptic genus for an M5-brane wrapping a hyperplane section of the quintic threefold.

The fivebrane of M theory -- the M5-brane -- is an especially interesting object. It plays a central role in a geometric understanding of the Seiberg-Witten solution of N=2 D=4 gauge theories as well as in certain new 6d quantum theories. The low energy effective action is an interacting theory of a (2,0) tensor multiplet. The fact that this multiplet contains a two-form gauge field with a self-dual field strength poses special challenges. Recent progress in addressing those ...

We present explicit methods for computing the discriminant curves and the associated Kodaira type fiber degeneracies of elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds. These methods are applied to a specific three-family, SU(5) grand unified theory of particle physics within the context of Heterotic M-Theory. It is demonstrated that there is always a region of moduli space where a bulk space five-brane is wrapped on a pure fiber in the Calabi-Yau threefold. Restricting the discus...

We consider the supergravity back-reaction of M2 branes wrapping around the space-time cycles in 1/8-BPS microstate geometries. We show that such brane wrappings will generically break all the supersymmetries. In particular, all the supersymmetries will be broken if there are such wrapped branes but the net charge of the wrapped branes is zero. We show that if M2 branes wrap a single cycle, or if they wrap a several of co-linear cycles with the same orientation, then the solu...

We study wrapped brane configurations via possible maximally supersymmetric gauged supergravities. First, we construct various supersymmetric wrapped D3 brane configurations from D=5 N=8 SO(6) gauged supergravity. This procedure provides certain new examples of wrapped D3 branes around supersymmetric cycles inside non-compact special holonomy manifolds. We analyze their behaviors numerically in order to discuss a correspondence to Higgs and Coulomb branches of sigma models on...

We compute four-derivative corrections to the AdS supergravity actions arising from the near-horizon geometry of N M5-branes wrapped on either one or two Riemann surfaces. This setup features the novel presence of both gauged isometries as well as nontrivial hypermultiplets. We argue that the 5d Chern-Simons terms receive not only higher-derivative corrections but also contributions from Killing vector parameters, which we find must also be corrected. We check the central cha...

We study U(1) symmetries dual to Betti multiplets in the AdS_4/CFT_3 correspondence for M2 branes at Calabi-Yau four-fold singularities. Analysis of the boundary conditions for vector fields in AdS_4 allows for a choice where wrapped M5 brane states carrying non-zero charge under such symmetries can be considered. We begin by focusing on isolated toric singularities without vanishing six-cycles, and study in detail the cone over Q^{111}. The boundary conditions considered are...
