We examine the lowest order quantum corrections to the effective action arising from a quantized real scalar field in the Randall-Sundrum background spacetime. The leading term is the familiar vacuum, or Casimir, energy density. The next term represents an induced gravity term that can renormalize the 4-dimensional Newtonian gravitational constant. The calculations are performed for an arbitrary spacetime dimension. Two inequivalent boundary conditions, corresponding to twist...

The Randall-Sundrum warped braneworld model is generalised to six and higher dimensions such that the warping has a non-trivial dependence on more than one dimension. This naturally leads to a brane-box like configuration alongwith scalar fields with possibly interesting cosmological roles. Also obtained naturally are two towers of 3 branes with mass scales clustered around either of Planck scale and TeV scale. Such a scenario has interesting phenomenological consequences inc...

We address the behaviour of the scalar field with negative mass squared in the five dimensional AdS space where the Randall-Sundrum brane-world is embedded. We point out that the tachyonic scalar allowed in the bulk space destabilizes the embedded brane-world where the cosmological constant is zero. The resolution of this instability is discussed from the viewpoint of AdS/CFT correspondence.

We study some cosmological consequences of the five dimensional, two brane Randall-Sundrum scenario. We integrate over the extra dimensions and in four dimensions the action reduces to that of scalar tensor gravity. The radius of the compact extra dimension is taken to be time dependent. It is shown that the radius of the extra dimension rapidly approaches a constant nonzero separation of branes. A radion dominated universe cannot undergo accelerated expansion in the absence o...

Randall and Sundrum have proposed that we live on a brane embedded in 5-dimensional anti-deSitter space, as a solution to the hierarchy problem. We examine the possibility of using a scalar field in the 5-D bulk as the inflaton, and show that it gives results which are indistinguishable from an inflaton which is restricted to our brane. This makes it difficult to get large enough density perturbations in simple one-field inflationary models, since mass scales on our brane are...

We construct an inflation model on the Randall-Sundrum I (RSI) brane where a bulk scalar field stabilizes the inter-brane separation. We study impact of the bulk scalar field on the inflationary dynamics on the brane. We proceed in two different approaches: in the first approach, the stabilizing field potential is directly appeared in the Friedmann equation and the resulting scenario is effectively a two-field inflation. In the second approach the stabilization mechanism is c...

We examine the modulus stabilization mechanism of a warped geometry model with nested warping. Such a model with multiple moduli is known to offer a possible resolution of the fermion mass hierarchy problem in the standard model. A six dimensional doubly warped braneworld model under consideration admits two distinct moduli, with the associated warp factors dynamically generating different physical mass scales on four 3-branes. In order to address the hierarchy problem relate...

We examine several different types of five dimensional stationary spacetimes with bulk scalar fields and parallel 3-branes. We study different methods for avoiding the appearance of spacetime singularities in the bulk for models with and without cosmological expansion. For non-expanding models, we demonstrate that in general the Randall-Sundrum warp factor is recovered in the asymptotic bulk region, although elsewhere the warping may be steeper than exponential. We show that ...

In the Randall-Sundrum scenario we consider exact 5-dimensional solutions with localized gravity which are associated with a well defined class of conformal bulk fields. We analyze their behaviour under radion field perturbations. We show that if the Randall-Sundrum exponential warp is the localizing metric function and the equation of state of the conformal fields is not changed by the radion perturbation then the 5-dimensional solutions are unstable. We present new stable s...

We discuss a stabilized brane world model with two branes, admitting the solution to the hierarchy problem due to the warped extra dimension and possessing a remarkable feature: the strength of gravitational interaction is of the same order on both branes, contrary to the case of the Randall-Sundrum model with a hierarchical difference of gravitational strength on the branes. The solution also admits the existence of two branes with an equal strength of gravitational interact...
