Motivated in part by Propp's intruded Aztec diamond regions, we consider hexagonal regions out of which two horizontal chains of triangular holes (called ferns) are removed, so that the chains are at the same height, and are attached to the boundary. By contrast with the intruded Aztec diamonds (whose number of domino tilings contain some large prime factors in their factorization), the number of lozenge tilings of our doubly-intruded hexagons turns out to be given by simple ...

We give another proof for the (-1)-enumeration of self-complementary plane partitions with at least one odd side-length by specializing a certain Schur function identity. The proof is analogous to Stanley's proof for the ordinary enumeration. In addition, we obtain enumerations of 180-degree symmetric rhombus tilings of hexagons with a barrier of arbitrary length along the central line.

We propose a discrete approach to solve problems on forming polygons from broken sticks, which is akin to counting polygons with sides of integer length subject to certain Diophantine inequalities. Namely, we use MacMahon's Partition Analysis to obtain a generating function for the size of the set of segments of a broken stick subject to these inequalities. In particular, we use this approach to show that for $n\geq k\geq 3$, the probability that a $k$-gon cannot be formed fr...

We present new, simple proofs for the enumeration of five of the ten symmetry classes of plane partitions contained in a given box. Four of them are derived from a simple determinant evaluation, using combinatorial arguments. The previous proofs of these four cases were quite complicated. For one more symmetry class we give an elementary proof in the case when two of the sides of the box are equal. Our results include simple evaluations of the determinants $\det(\delta_{ij}+{...

In this paper, we study the number of representations of a positive integer $n$ by two positive integers whose product is a multiple of a polygonal number.

We compute the number of rhombus tilings of a hexagon with sides $N,M,N,N,M,N$, which contain a fixed rhombus on the symmetry axis that cuts through the sides of length $M$.

We provide a refinement of MacMahon's partition identity on sequence-avoiding partitions, and use it to produce another mod 6 partition identity. In addition, we show that our technique also extends to cover Andrews's generalization of MacMahon's identity. Our proofs are bijective in nature, exploiting a theorem of Xiong and Keith.

In this paper we enumerate the centrally symmetric lozenge tilings of a hexagon with a shamrock removed from its center. Our proof is based on a variant of Kuo's graphical condensation method in which only three of the four involved vertices are on the same face. As a special case, we obtain a new proof of the enumeration of the self-complementary plane partitions.

In the paper [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 43 (1986), 103--113], Stanley gives formulas for the number of plane partitions in each of ten symmetry classes. This paper together with results by Andrews [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 66 (1994), 28-39] and Stembridge [Adv. Math 111 (1995), 227-243] completes the project of proving all ten formulas. We enumerate cyclically symmetric, self-complementary plane partitions. We first convert plane partitions to tilings of a hexagon in the pla...

Rohatgi and the author recently proved a shuffling theorem for lozenge tilings of `doubly-dented hexagons' (arXiv:1905.08311). The theorem can be considered as a hybrid between two classical theorems in the enumeration of tilings: MacMahon's theorem about centrally symmetric hexagons and Cohn-Larsen-Prop's theorem about semihexagons with dents. In this paper, we consider a similar shuffling theorem for the centrally symmetric tilings of the doubly-dented hexagons. Our theorem...
