In this paper we study the modular classes of Dirac manifolds and of Dirac maps, and we discuss their basic properties. We apply these results to explain the relationship between the modular classes of the various structures involved in the reduction of a Poisson manifold under the action by of a Poisson Lie group.

This work contains a brief and elementary exposition of the foundations of Poisson and symplectic geometries, with an emphasis on applications for Hamiltonian systems with second-class constraints. In particular, we clarify the geometric meaning of the Dirac bracket on a symplectic manifold and provide a proof of the Jacobi identity on a Poisson manifold. A number of applications of the Dirac bracket are described: applications for the proof of the compatibility of a system c...

We present a generalized reduction procedure which encompasses the one based on the momentum map and the projection method. By using the duality between manifolds and ring of functions defined on them, we have cast our procedure in an algebraic context. In this framework we give a simple example of reduction in the non-commutative setting.

Dirac submanifolds are a natural generalization in the Poisson category for symplectic submanifolds of a symplectic manifold. In a certain sense they correspond to symplectic subgroupoids of the symplectic groupoid of the given Poisson manifold. In particular, Dirac submanifolds arise as the stable locus of a Poisson involution. In this paper, we provide a general study for these submanifolds including both local and global aspects. In the second part of the paper, we stu...

Let $X$ be a manifold with a bi-Poisson structure $\{\eta^t\}$ generated by a pair of $G$-invariant symplectic structures $\omega_1$ and $\omega_2$, where the Lie group $G$ acts properly on $X$. Let $H$ be some isotropy subgroup for this action representing the principle orbit type and $X^r_\mathfrak{h}$ be the submanifold of $X$ consisting of the points in $X$ with the stabilizer algebra equal to the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{h}$ of $H$ and with the stabilizer group conjugated ...

We give a local normal form for Dirac structures. As a consequence, we show that the dimensions of the pre-symplectic leaves of a Dirac manifold have the same parity. We also show that, given a point $m$ of a Dirac manifold $M$, there is a well-defined transverse Poisson structure to the pre-symplectic leaf $P$ through $m$. Finally, we describe the neighborhood of a pre-symplectic leaf in terms of geometric data. This description agrees with that given by Vorobjev for the Poi...

There have been several attempts in recent years to extend the notions of symplectic and Poisson structures in order to create a suitable geometrical framework for classical field theories, trying to achieve a success similar to the use of these concepts in Hamiltonian mechanics. These notions always have a graded character, since the multisymplectic forms are of a higher degree than two. Another line of work has been to extend the concept of Dirac structures to these new sce...

We extend the correspondence between Poisson maps and actions of symplectic groupoids, which generalizes the one between momentum maps and hamiltonian actions, to the realm of Dirac geometry. As an example, we show how hamiltonian quasi-Poisson manifolds fit into this framework by constructing an ``inversion'' procedure relating quasi-Poisson bivectors to twisted Dirac structures.

In this paper we study the symplectic and Poisson geometry of moduli spaces of flat connections over quilted surfaces. These are surfaces where the structure group varies from region to region in the surface, and where a reduction (or relation) of structure occurs along the boundaries of the regions. Our main theoretical tool is a new form moment-map reduction in the context of Dirac geometry. This reduction framework allows us to use very general relations of structure group...

According to the Weinstein splitting theorem, any Poisson manifold is locally, near any given point, a product of a symplectic manifold with another Poisson manifold whose Poisson structure vanishes at the point. Similar splitting results are known e.g. for Lie algebroids, Dirac structures and generalized complex structures. In this paper, we develop a novel approach towards these results that leads to various generalizations, including their equivariant versions as well as t...
