We investigate the reactions p n -> d omega and p n -> d phi close to the corresponding thresholds. The S-wave amplitudes are calculated within the framework of the two-step model which is described by a triangle graph with pi, rho and omega mesons in the intermediate state. The cross sections of the reactions p n -> d omega and p n -> d phi are predicted to be significantly larger than the cross sections of the corresponding reactions p p -> p p omega and p p -> p p phi at the same values of the c.m. excess energy Q. The ratio of the yields of phi to omega is found to be (30 +/- 7) x 10^-3.

The reactions p+n-->d+omega and p+n-->d+phi are studied within a relativistic meson-exchange model of hadronic interactions. Predictions for the total cross sections and for the angular distributions of the vector mesons are presented. The total cross section for omega production in the pp -> pp omega reaction has been measured at five c.m. excess energies from 3.8 to 30 MeV. Results of a combined analysis are presented for the production of $\omega$ and $\phi$ mesons in $\pi N$ reactions in the near-threshold region using throughoutly a conventional ''non-strange'' dynamics based on such processes which are allowed by the non-ideal $\omega-\phi$ mixing. The available data on $\omega$ and $\phi$ production from $\pi N$ and $pp$ collisions are reanalyzed with respect to an OZI rule violation on the basis of transition matrix elements. The data are found to be compatible with a constant ratio $R$ up to excess energies $\epsilon{\approx}300$ MeV, however, the ratio $R$ deviates substantially from the SU(3) prediction based on the present knowledge of the $\phi-\omega$ mixing angle.

We investigate OZI rule violation in omega and phi-meson photoproduction off nucleons. Data on the total cross sections indicate a large phi/omega ratio of about 0.8 at the maximal available photon energy that is in good agreement with expectations from QCD. Vector meson ($V = \omega, \phi$) production in near-threshold elementary nucleon-nucleon collisions $pp\to ppV$, $pn\to pnV$ and $pn\to dV$ is studied within an effective meson-nucleon theory. The reaction $pp \to pp \phi$ is investigated within a relativistic meson-exchange model of hadronic interactions. The possibility of extracting the $NN\phi$ coupling constant from a study of this process is explored. A combined analysis of $\omega-$ and $\phi$-meson production in proton-proton collisions utilizing recent data on these reactions is carried out and yields values for $g_{NN\phi}$ that are compatible with the OZI rule.

The two-step model with pi-, rho- and omega- exchanges taken into account is applied to investigate the reactions pn -> d eta and pn -> d eta-prime. The existing experimental data on the reaction pn -> d eta are analysed and predictions for the cross section of the reaction pn -> d eta-prime are presented. It is found that pi- as well as rho exchange yield significant contributions in both reactions. The effect of the final state interaction is also studied.
