It is shown that the free-carrier (Drude) absorption of circularly polarized radiation in quantum well structures leads to an electric current flow. The photocurrent reverses its direction upon switching the light helicity. A pure orbital mechanism of such a circular photogalvanic effect is proposed that is based on interference of different pathways contributing to the light absorption. Calculation shows that the magnitude of the helicity dependent photocurrent in $n$-doped ...

The resonant circular photogalvanic effect is observed in wurtzite (0001)-oriented GaN low-dimensional structures excited by infrared radiation. The current is induced by angular momentum transfer of photons to the photoexcited electrons at resonant inter-subband optical transitions in a GaN/AlGaN heterojunction. The signal reverses upon the reversal of the radiation helicity or, at fixed helicity, when the propagation direction of the photons is reversed. Making use of the t...

A detailed study of the circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE) in SiGe structures is presented. It is shown that the CPGE becomes possible due to the built-in asymmetry of quantum wells (QWs) in compositionally stepped samples and in asymmetrically doped structures. The photocurrent arises due to optical spin orientation of free carriers in QWs with spin splitting in k-space. It is shown that the effect can be applied to probe the macroscopic in-plane symmetry of low dimensiona...

It is shown that absorption of circularly polarized infrared radiation achieved by inter-subband and intra-subband (Drude-like) transitions results in a monopolar spin orientation of free carriers. The monopolar spin polarization in zinc-blende-based quantum wells (QWs) is demonstrated by the observation of the spin-galvanic and circular photogalvanic effects. It is shown that monopolar spin orientation in n-type QWs becomes possible if an admixture of valence band states to ...

We report on the magneto-gyrotropic photogalvanic effect (MPGE) in n-doped (110)-grown GaAs/AlGaAs quantum-well (QW) structures caused by free-carrier absorption of terahertz radiation in the presence of a magnetic field. The photocurrent behavior upon variation of the radiation polarization state, magnetic field orientation and temperature is studied. The developed theory of MPGE describes well all experimental results. It is demonstrated that the structure inversion asymmet...

Thanks to the strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI), HgTe-based quantum wells (QWs) exhibit very rich spin-related properties. But the full descriptions of them are beyond the simple parabolic band models and conventional Rashba and Dresselhaus SOI terms, as a result of the strong interband coupling of the narrow gap band structures. Here, we develop a theoretical method to calculate the circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE) in Hg$_{0.3}$Cd$_{0.7}$Te/HgTe/Hg$_{0.3}$Cd$_{0.7}$Te ...

Spin-to-charge conversion in monolayer and bilayer germanium(Ge) nanosheets was demonstrated via the circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE). The CPGE current generated in a spin-splitting state of the Ge nanosheet reached a maximum value when the thickness of the Ge nanosheet corresponded to bilayer germanene, indicating that the top layer of the bilayer Ge nanosheet mainly contributed to the spin-to-charge conversion. Because the hybridization of orbitals is suppressed by isol...

A theory of the circular photogalvanic effect caused by spin splitting in quantum wells is developed. Direct interband transitions between the hole and electron size-quantized subbands are considered. It is shown that the photocurrent value and direction depend strongly on the form of the spin-orbit interaction. The currents induced by structure-, bulk-, and interface-inversion asymmetry are investigated. The photocurrent excitation spectra caused by spin splittings in both c...

Weyl semimetal (WSM) is expected to be an ideal spintronic material owing to its spin currents carried by the bulk and surface states with spin-momentum locking. A photocurrent generation in noncentrosymmetric WSM was also predicted owing to its broken inversion symmetry and linear energy dispersion which are unique to Weyl systems. In our recent measurements, the circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE) has been demonstrated in WSM of TaAs. The CPGE voltage is proportional to th...

In this work we investigated the InAs/InAlAs quantum wires (QWRs) superlattice by optically exciting the structure with near-infrared radiation. By varying the helicity of the radiation at room temperature we observed the circular photogalvanic effect related to the $C_{2v}$ symmetry of the structure, which could be attributed to the formation of a quasi two-dimensional system underlying in the vicinity of the QWRs pattern. The ratio of Rashba and Dresselhaus terms shows an e...
