We present a study on photonic vertical cavities consisting of nonlinear materials embedded in photonic crystals (PhCs) for resonantly enhancing second harmonic generation (SHG). Previous attempts at SHG in such structures have been limited to efficiencies of 10$^{-7}$ to 10$^{-5}$, but we demonstrate here a high SHG efficiency of 0.28% by constructing a vertical cavity with a lithium niobate membrane placed between two PhCs, which exhibits high quality resonances. Our result...

We study second harmonic generation in nonlinear, GaAs gratings. We find large enhancement of conversion efficiency when the pump field excites the guided mode resonances of the grating. Under these circumstances the spectrum near the pump wavelength displays sharp resonances characterized by dramatic enhancements of local fields and favorable conditions for second harmonic generation, even in regimes of strong linear absorption at the harmonic wavelength. In particular, in a...

Light with light control of surface plasmon polaritons is theoretically demonstrated. A barely simple and compact source of these waves consists in a finite number of slits (evenly spaced) perforating a metal film. The system scatters electromagnetic fields in one side of the metal film when it is illuminated from the opposite side by a polarized light source. High intensity light sources moreover efficiently generate light at second harmonic and higher frequencies in the met...

We introduce a nonlinear photonic system that enables asymmetric localization and unidirectional transfer of an electromagnetic wave through the second harmonic generation process. Our proposed scattering setup consists of a non-centrosymmetric nonlinear slab with nonlinear susceptibility $\chi^{(2)}$ placed to the left of a one-dimensional periodic linear photonic crystal with an embedded defect. We engineered the linear lattice to allow the localization of a selected freque...

We theoretically investigate the dynamics, bifurcation structure and stability of quadratic dark localized dissipative states arising in cavity enhanced second-harmonic generation. These states, formed through the locking of plane front waves, undergo collapsed homoclinic snaking and may exhibit oscillatory dynamics.

The change in the relative phase between two light fields serves as a basic principle for the measurement of the physical quantity that guides this change. It would therefore be highly advantageous if the relative phase could be amplified to enhance the measurement resolution. One well-known method for phase amplification involves the use of the multi-photon number and path entangled state known as the NOON state; however, a high-number NOON state is very difficult to prepare...

Surface plasmon resonances, the coherent oscillation of free electrons, can concentrate incident field into small volumes much smaller than the incident wavelength. The intense fields at these \textit{hot spots} enhance the light-matter interactions and may lead to the appearance of nonlinearity. Controlling such nonlinearities is significant for various practical applications. Here we report that by coupling dark modes to the first and the generated second harmonic modes sep...

Boosting nonlinear frequency conversion in extremely confined volumes remains a key challenge in nano-optics, nanomedicine, photocatalysis, and background-free biosensing. To this aim, field enhancements in plasmonic nanostructures are often exploited to effectively compensate for the lack of phase-matching at the nanoscale. Second harmonic generation (SHG) is, however, strongly quenched by the high degree of symmetry in plasmonic materials at the atomic scale and in nanoante...

We theoretically propose a scheme to explore the magnetically and magnomechanically induced transparency phenomena in a cross-cavity magnomechanical system, focusing on the role of relative phase and the intensity of the two probing fields in enhancing the absorption and transmission spectra and manipulating the group delay of the transmitted light. Interestingly, the relative phase of the two probe fields could have overwhelming effects on both the absorption spectrum and th...

Perfect absorption of light critically affects light-matter interaction for various applications. Coherent perfect absorbers (CPA) gain the unique capability of controlling light with light in a linear fashion. Multi-color CPAs [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 033901] are highly desirable for broadband and nonlinear light-to-light coherent control, however, the experimental demonstration has still remained elusive. Here we experimentally observe a dual-color version of CPA (DC-CPA) thr...
