Polynomial-in-time dependent symmetries are analysed for polynomial-in-time dependent evolution equations. Graded Lie algebras, especially Virasoro algebras, are used to construct nonlinear variable-coefficient evolution equations, both in 1+1 dimensions and in 2+1 dimensions, which possess higher-degree polynomial-in-time dependent symmetries. The theory also provides a kind of new realisation of graded Lie algebras. Some illustrative examples are given.

By starting from known graded Lie algebras, including Virasoro algebras, new kinds of time-dependent evolution equations are found possessing graded symmetry algebras. The modified KP equations are taken as an illustrative example: new modified KP equations with $m$ arbitrary time-dependent coefficients are obtained possessing symmetries involving $m$ arbitrary functions of time. A particular graded symmetry algebra for the modified KP equations is derived in this connection ...

We present the explicit formulae, describing the structure of symmetries and formal symmetries of any scalar (1+1)-dimensional evolution equation. Using these results, the formulae for the leading terms of commutators of two symmetries and two formal symmetries are found. The generalization of these results to the case of system of evolution equations is also discussed.

We discuss Lie algebras of the Lie symmetry groups of two generically non-integrable equations in one temporal and two space dimensions arising in different contexts. The first is a generalization of the KP equation and contains 9 arbitrary functions of one and two arguments. The second one is a system of PDEs that depend on some physical parameters. We require that these PDEs are invariant under a Kac-Moody-Virasoro algebra. This leads to several limitations on the coefficie...

We obtain complete classification of in-equivalent realizations of the Virasoro algebra by Lie vector fields over the three-dimensional field of real numbers. As an application we construct new classes of nonlinear second-order partial differential equations possessing infinite-dimensional Lie symmetries.

In this paper we study Lie symmetries, Kac-Moody-Virasoro algebras, similarity reductions and particular solutions of two different recently introduced (2+1)-dimensional nonlinear evolution equations, namely (i) (2+1)-dimensional breaking soliton equation and (ii) (2+1)-dimensional nonlinear Schr\"odinger type equation introduced by Zakharov and studied later by Strachan. Interestingly our studies show that not all integrable higher dimensional systems admit Kac-Moody-Virasor...

An isospectral hierarchy of commutative integrable systems associated with a polynomial spectral problem is proposed. The resulting hierarchy possesses a recursion structure controlled by a hereditary operator. The nonisospectral flows generate the time first order dependent symmetries of the isospectral hierarchy, which constitute Virasoro symmetry algebras together with commutative symmetries.

The $x$-dependence of the symmetries of (1+1)-dimensional scalar translationally invariant evolution equations is described. The sufficient condition of (quasi)polynomiality in time $t$ of the symmetries of evolution equations with constant separant is found. The general form of time dependence of the symmetries of KdV-like non-linearizable evolution equations is presented.

We suggest the method for group classification of evolution equations admitting nonlocal symmetries which are associated with a given evolution equation possessing nontrivial Lie symmetry. We apply this method to second-order evolution equations in one spatial variable invariant under Lie algebras of the dimension up to three. As a result, we construct the broad families of new nonlinear evolution equations possessing nonlocal symmetries which in principle cannot be obtained ...

We develop efficient group-theoretical approach to the problem of classification of evolution equations that admit non-local transformation groups (quasi-local symmetries), i.e., groups involving integrals of the dependent variable. We classify realizations of two- and three-dimensional Lie algebras leading to equations admitting quasi-local symmetries. Finally, we generalize the approach in question for the case of an arbitrary system of evolution equations with two independ...

The first part of the book is devoted to the symmetry approach to classification of scalar integrable evolution PDEs with two independent variables. In the second part systems of evolution equations with polynomial homogeneous right-hand side are considered. Such systems are associated with associative algebras and, more generally, with non-associative algebraic structures, whose structural constants are defined by the coefficients of the system under consideration. We explor...
