We present the basic ideas of geometric engineering of the supersymmetric quantum field theories viewed as a low energy limit of type II strings and F-theory on singular Calabi Yau manifolds. We first give the main lines of toric geometry as it is a powerful technique to deal compact complex manifolds. Then we introduce mirror symmetry which plays a crucial role in the study of superstring dualities and finally we give elements on Calabi Yau singularities. After that we study...

Motivated by a demand for explicit genus 1 Belyi maps from theoretical physics, we give an efficient method of explicitly computing genus one Belyi maps by (1) composing covering maps from elliptic curves to the Riemann sphere with simpler (univariate) genus zero Belyi maps, as well as by (2) composing further with isogenies between elliptic curves. This gives many new explicit dessins on the doubly periodic plane, including several which have been realized in the physics lit...

The 2d (0,2) supersymmetric gauge theories corresponding to the classes of Y^{p,k}(CP^1 x CP^1) and Y^{p,k}(CP^2) manifolds are identified. The complex cones over these Sasaki-Einstein 7-manifolds are non-compact toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds. These infinite families of geometries are the largest ones for Sasaki-Einstein 7-manifolds whose metrics, toric diagrams, and volume functions are known explicitly. This work therefore presents the largest classification of 2d (0,2) supersym...

The problem of classifying off-shell representations of the $N$-extended one-dimensional super Poincar\'{e} algebra is closely related to the study of a class of decorated $N$-regular, $N$-edge colored bipartite graphs known as {\em Adinkras}. In this paper we {\em canonically} realize these graphs as Grothendieck ``dessins d'enfants,'' or Belyi curves uniformized by certain normal torsion-free subgroups of the $(N,N,2)$-triangle group. We exhibit an explicit algebraic model ...

Bipartite graphs, especially drawn on Riemann surfaces, have of late assumed an active role in theoretical physics, ranging from MHV scattering amplitudes to brane tilings, from dimer models and topological strings to toric AdS/CFT, from matrix models to dessins d'enfants in gauge theory. Here, we take a brief and casual promenade in the realm of brane tilings, quiver SUSY gauge theories and dessins, serving as a rapid introduction to the reader.

We explain the observation by Candelas and Font that the Dynkin diagrams of nonabelian gauge groups occurring in type IIA and F-theory can be read off from the polyhedron $\Delta^*$ that provides the toric description of the Calabi-Yau manifold used for compacification. We show how the intersection pattern of toric divisors corresponding to the degeneration of elliptic fibers follows the ADE classification of singularities and the Kodaira classification of degenerations. We t...

Brane tilings describe Lagrangians (vector multiplets, chiral multiplets, and the superpotential) of four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theories. These theories, written in terms of a bipartite graph on a torus, correspond to worldvolume theories on $N$ D$3$-branes probing a toric Calabi-Yau threefold singularity. A pair of permutations compactly encapsulates the data necessary to specify a brane tiling. We show that geometric consistency for brane tilings,...

We show that toric geometry can be used rather effectively to translate a brane configuration to geometry. Roughly speaking the skeletons of toric space are identified with the brane configurations. The cases where the local geometry involves hypersurfaces in toric varieties (such as P^2 blown up at more than 3 points) presents a challenge for the brane picture. We also find a simple physical explanation of Batyrev's construction of mirror pairs of Calabi-Yau manifolds using ...

We show how to map Grothendieck's dessins d'enfants to algebraic curves as Seiberg-Witten curves, then use the mirror map and the AGT map to obtain the corresponding 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric instanton partition functions and 2d Virasoro conformal blocks. We explicitly demonstrate the 6 trivalent dessins with 4 punctures on the sphere. We find that the parametrizations obtained from a dessin should be related by certain duality for gauge theories. Then we will discuss...

Brane tilings provide the most general framework in string and M-theory for matching toric Calabi-Yau singularities probed by branes with superconformal fixed points of quiver gauge theories. The brane tiling data consists of a bipartite tiling of the torus which encodes both the classical superpotential and gauge-matter couplings for the quiver gauge theory. We consider the class of tilings which contain only tiles bounded by exactly four edges and present a method for gener...
