We discuss the absorption cross section for the minimally-coupled massless scalar field into a stationary and circularly symmetric black hole with nonzero angular velocity in four or higher dimensions. In particular, we show that it equals the horizon area in the zero-frequency limit provided that the solution of the scalar field equation with an incident monochromatic plane wave converges pointwise to a smooth time-independent solution outside the black hole and on the futur...

We review the topic of 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, which has been the subject of considerable interest over the past two years. Our review begins with a general introduction to Lovelock's theorem, and the subject of Gauss-Bonnet terms in the action for gravity. These areas are of fundamental importance for understanding modified theories of gravity, and inform our subsequent discussion of recent attempts to include the effects of a Gauss-Bonnet term in four space-time d...

The absorption cross section for scalar particle impact on a Schwarzschild black hole is found. The process is dominated by two physical phenomena. One of them is the well-known greybody factor that arises from the energy-dependent potential barrier outside the horizon that filters the incoming and outgoing waves. The other is related to the reflection of particles on the horizon (Kuchiev 2003). This latter effect strongly diminishes the cross section for low energies, forcin...

We study the absorption of massless scalar waves in a geometry that interpolates between the Schwarzschild solution and a wormhole that belongs to the Morris-Thorne class of solutions. In the middle of the interpolation branch, this geometry describes a regular black hole. We use the partial wave approach to compute the scalar absorption cross section in this geometry. Our results show that black holes and wormholes present distinctive absorption spectra. We conclude, for ins...

We examine the interaction between quantum test particles and the gravitational field generated by a black hole solution that was recently obtained in the consistent 4-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. While quasinormal modes of scalar, electromagnetic, and Dirac fields have been recently studied in this theory, there is no such study for the quasibound states. Here, we calculate the spectrum of quasibound states for the test fields in a spherically symmetric and asy...

In this Letter we present a general covariant modified theory of gravity in $D\!=\!4$ space-time dimensions which propagates only the massless graviton and bypasses the Lovelock's theorem. The theory we present is formulated in $D\!>\!4$ dimensions and its action consists of the Einstein-Hilbert term with a cosmological constant, and the Gauss-Bonnet term multiplied by a factor $1/(D\!-\!4)$. The four-dimensional theory is defined as the limit $D\!\to\!4$. In this singular li...

Following Sanchez's approach we investigate the effect of scalar mass in the absorption and emission problems of 4d Schwarzschild black hole. The absorption cross sections for arbitrary angular momentum of the scalar field are computed numerically in the full range of energy by making use of the analytic near-horizon and asymptotic solutions and their analytic continuations. The scalar mass makes an interesting effect in the low-energy absorption cross section for S-wave. Unl...

We study the absorption of a massless scalar field by a static black hole. Using the continuity equation that arises from the Klein-Gordon equation, it is possible to define a normalized absorption rate $\Gamma(t)$ for the scalar field as it falls into the black hole. It is found that the absorption mainly depends upon the characteristics wavelengths involved in the physical system: the mean wavenumber and the width of the wave packet, but that it is insensitive to the scalar...

We study the absorption of monochromatic electromagnetic plane waves impinging upon a Kerr black hole, in the general case that the direction of incidence is not aligned with the black hole spin axis. We present numerical results that are in accord with low- and high-frequency approximations. We find that circularly-polarized waves are distinguished by the black hole spin, with counter-rotating polarizations being more absorbed than co-rotating polarizations. At low frequenci...

In this work, we investigate the scattering of massless plane scalar waves by the high dimensional noncommutative Schwarzschild-Tangherlini black hole. We use the partial wave approach to determine the scattering and absorption cross sections in the incident wavelength range. Our numerical results demonstrate that the bigger the noncommutative parameter, the smaller the maximum value of the related partial absorption cross section, however the tendency is slightly. We also di...
