We study the absorption of massive spin-half particles by a small Schwarzschild black hole by numerically solving the single-particle Dirac equation in Painleve-Gullstrand coordinates. We calculate the absorption cross section for a range of gravitational couplings Mm/m_P^2 and incident particle energies E. At high couplings, where the Schwarzschild radius R_S is much greater than the wavelength lambda, we find that the cross section approaches the classical result for a poin...

We study black holes in a modified gravity scenario involving a scalar field quadratically coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. The scalar is assumed to be in a spontaneously broken phase at spatial infinity due to a bare Higgs-like potential. For a proper choice of sign, the non-minimal coupling to gravity leads to symmetry restoration near the black hole horizon, prompting the development of the scalar wall in its vicinity. The wall thickness depends on the bare mass of t...

In this paper we consider the solution of a black hole with a global monopole in $f(R)$ gravity and apply the partial wave approach to compute the differential scattering cross section and absorption cross section. We show that in the low-frequency limit and at small angles the contribution to the dominant term in the scattering/absorption cross section is modified by the presence of the global monopole and the gravity modification. In such limit, the absorption cross section...

Singularities are common features of general relativity black holes. However, within general relativity, one can construct black holes that present no singularities. These regular black hole solutions can be achieved by, for instance, relaxing one of the energy conditions on the stress energy tensor sourcing the black hole. Some regular black hole solutions were found in the context of non-linear electrodynamics, the Bardeen black hole being the first one proposed. In this pa...

We investigate null geodesics impinging parallel to the rotation axis of a Kerr-Newman black hole, and show that the absorption cross section for a massless scalar field in the eikonal limit can be described in terms of the photon orbit parameters. We compare our sinc and low-frequency approximations with numerical results, showing that they are in excellent agreement.

Recently Glavan and Lin [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 081301 (2020)] formulated a novel Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in which the Gauss-Bonnet coupling has been rescaled as $\alpha/(D-4)$ and the $4D$ theory is defined as the limit $D \rightarrow 4$, which preserves the number degrees of freedom thereby free from the Ostrogradsky instability. We present exact spherically symmetric nonstatic null dust solutions in the novel 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity that bypasses the Lovelock...

Accurate and powerful analytic and computational methods developped by the author allow to obtain the highly non trivial total absorption spectrum of the Black Hole, as well as phase shifts and cross sections (elastic and inelastic), the angular distribution of absorbed and scattered waves, and the Hawking emission rates. The exact total absorption spectrum of waves by the Black Hole presents as a function of frequency a remarkable oscillatory behaviour characteristic of a di...

In a strong electromagnetic field, gravitational waves are converted into electromagnetic waves of the same frequency, and vice versa. Here we calculate the scattering and conversion cross sections for a planar wave impinging upon a Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole in vacuum, using the partial-wave expansion and numerical methods. We show that, at long wavelengths, the conversion cross section matches that computed by Feynman-diagram techniques. At short wavelengths, the essen...

Recently a novel four-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (4EGB) theory of gravity was proposed by Glavan and Lin [D. Glavan and C. Lin, Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 081301 (2020)] which includes a regularized Gauss-Bonnet term by using the re-scaling of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $\alpha \to \alpha/(D-4)$ in the limit $D\to 4$. This theory also has been reformulated to a specific class of the Horndeski theory with an additional scalar degree of freedom and to a spatial covari...

In a recent series of papers we have shown how the eikonal/geometrical optics approximation can be used to calculate analytically the fundamental quasinormal mode frequencies associated with coupled systems of wave equations, which arise, for instance, in the study of perturbations of black holes in gravity theories beyond General Relativity. As a continuation to this series, we here focus on the quasinormal modes of nonrotating black holes in scalar Gauss-Bonnet gravity assu...
