Highly dense MgB2 policrystalline bulk materials, obtained by reactive liquid infiltration, have been characterized in their superconducting transport and magnetic properties in magnetic field and in a temperature range of interest for the MgB2 compound. The products have a granular morphology of composite nature and their overall density affects their properties. The irreversibility line, Bc1(T) values, magnetically measured current densities and the trapped magnetic field a...

We synthesized polycrystalline MgB2 from a stoichiometric mixture of Mg and the 11 B isotope under different conditions. All the samples showed bulk superconductivity with Tc = 38~39 K. The samples containing the least amount of unreacted Mg showed the highest Tc and the sharpest transition width (Delta_Tc). A residual resistivity ratio (RRR) of ~ 5.8, and a magnetoresistance (MR), at 40 K, of 12% were obtained for these samples. Moreover, there was no upturn of resistivity i...

We present electrical transport, magnetization, and specific heat measurements on bulk MgB2 samples (T_{c} = 38.5 K) synthesized under 200 MPa pressure using a process based on hot isostatic pressing with cooling under pressure. The samples are fully dense and display excellent superconducting properties, including a narrow superconducting transition width (\Delta T_{c} = 0.75 K), a high upper critical field H_{c2} (H_{c2}(0) ~ 155 kOe), and a critical current density J_{c} t...

We report on the synthesis and measurements of the temperature dependence of resistivity, R(T), the penetration depth, l(T), and upper critical magnetic field, Hc2(T), for polycrystalline samples of dodecaboride ZrB12 and diboride MgB2. We conclude that ZrB12 as well as MgB2 behave like simple metals in the normal state with usual Bloch-Gruneisen temperature dependence of resistivity and with rather low resistive Debye temperature, TR=280 K, for ZrB12 (as compared to MgB2 wit...

MgB2 hollow wires have been produced with a new technique which uses a conventional wire manufacturing process but is applied to composite billets containing the elemental B and Mg precursors in an appropriate shape. The technique has been applied to the manufacture of both monofilamentary and multifilamentary wires of several tens meters length. The superconducting transport properties of the MgB2 hollow wires have been measured in magnetic field and in the temperature range...

A new route to the sintering of MgB2 has been identified, based on a reactive infiltration of liquid Mg on a powdered B preform. The technique allows to obtain large bulk manufacts in an inexpensive way, without the need of high pressure apparatus. The best of the obtained samples shows a transport current density of 3 kA/cm2 at 4.2K and 9 T. The critical aspects of the technology are presented, together with the recent achievements and the perspective applications.

We report magnetic field dependent magnetization and microwave impedance measurements on a MgB2 superconductor prepared by high pressure synthesis. We find that the upper critical field is linearly dependent on temperature near Tc and the dc irreversibility field exponent is ~1.4. The microwave data display an excess surface resistance below Tc which is neither observed in low Tc nor in high temperature superconductors (HTSC). The real part of the complex conductivity, sigma1...

The MgB2 - based material high-pressure synthesized at 2 GPa and 800 C for 1 h from Mg and B (taken in the stoichiometry ratio of MgB2) with addition of 2-10 wt% of Ti demonstrated the critical current density (jc) higher than 100 kA/cm^2 at 33 K in 0 T field and at 20 K up to 3 T. At 20 K the critical current density higher than 10 kA/cm^2 was observed up to 5 T field. In the magnetic field up to 2 T high-pressure synthesized MgB2 (with 10 % of Ti) at 20 K behaves in the sam...

The paper presents discussion on up to date results on MgB2 conductors from the point of view of their future dc and ac applications. Basic physical parameters of MgB2 compound relevant to conductors are introduced. Different conductor preparation methods and conductor architectures are presented and attainable critical current densities discussed. Some numerical results on critical currents and ac losses of future multifilamentary MgB2 conductors with magnetic cladding of th...

Transport and thermodynamic properties of a sintered pellet of the newly discovered $MgB_2$ superconductor have been measured to determine the characteristic critical magnetic fields and critical current densities. Both resistive transition and magnetization data give similar values of the upper critical field, $H_{c2}$, with magnetization data giving $dH_{c2}/dT=0.44~T/K$ at the transition temperature of $T_c=40.2 K$. Close to the transition temperature, magnetization curves...
