Correlation functions of dimer operators, the product operators of spins on two adjacent sites, are studied in the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXZ chain in the critical regime. The amplitudes of the leading oscillating terms in the dimer correlation functions are determined with high accuracy as functions of the exchange anisotropy parameter and the external magnetic field, through the combined use of bosonization and density-matrix renormalization group methods. In particular, for th...

A new variational technique for investigation of the ground state and correlation functions in 1D quantum magnets is proposed. A spin Hamiltonian is reduced to a fermionic representation by the Jordan-Wigner transformation. The ground state is described by a new non-local trial wave function, and the total energy is calculated in an analytic form as a function of two variational parameters. This approach is demonstrated with an example of the XXZ-chain of spin-1/2 under a sta...

Exact results for the dynamic dimer and trimer structure factors of the one-dimensional s=1/2 XX model in a transverse magnetic field ($\parallel z$) are presented and discussed in relation to known exact results for the dynamic spin structure factors. In the framework of the Jordan-Wigner representation, the accessible spectrum of the dimer fluctuation operator is limited to two-fermion excitations whereas that of the trimer fluctuation operator involves two-fermion and four...

We use the Jordan-Wigner representation to study dynamic quantities for the spin-1/2 XX chain in a transverse magnetic field. We discuss in some detail the properties of the four-fermion excitation continuum which is probed by the dynamic trimer structure factor.

The spin 1/2 XXZ chain in a random magnetic field pointing in the Z direction is numerically studied using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) method. The phase diagram as a function of the anisotropy of the XXZ Hamiltonian and the strength of the random field is analyzed by computing the spin correlations and the superfluid density. To obtain the superfluid density we consider a superblock configuration representing a closed system with an arbitrary twist at the ...

A simple modification of the standard Renormalization Group (RG) technique for the study of quantum spin systems is introduced. Our method which takes into account the effect of boundary conditions by employing the concept of superblock, may be regarded as a simple way for obtaining first estimates of many properties of spin systems. By applying this method to the xxz spin 1/2 Heisenberg chain, we obtain the ground state energy with much higher accuracy than the standard RG. ...

We study the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain in both uniform and (perpendicular) staggered magnetic fields using the density-matrix renormalization-group method. This model has been shown earlier to describe the physics of the copper benzoate materials in magnetic field. In the present work, we extend the study to more general case for a systematic investigation of the field-induced gap and related properties of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. In ...

We investigate the phase diagram of an anisotropic ferrimagnet spin-(1/2, 1) in the presence of a non-commuting (transverse) magnetic field. We find a magnetization plateau for the isotropic case while there is no plateau for the anisotropic ferrimagnet. The magnetization plateau can appear only when the Hamiltonian has the U(1) symmetry in the presence of the magnetic field. The anisotropic model is driven by the magnetic field from the N\'{e}el phase for low fields to the s...

In this paper we continue and extend a systematic study of plateaux in magnetization curves of antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin-1/2 ladders. We first review a bosonic field-theoretical formulation of a single XXZ-chain in the presence of a magnetic field, which is then used for an Abelian bosonization analysis of N weakly coupled chains. Predictions for the universality classes of the phase transitions at the plateaux boundaries are obtained in addition to a quantization con...

We study the interplay of electric and magnetic order in the one dimensional Heisenberg spin-1/2 XXZ chain with large Ising anisotropy in the presence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (D-M) interaction and with longitudinal and transverse magnetic fields, interpreting the D-M interaction as a coupling between the local electric polarization and an external electric field. We obtain the ground state phase diagram using the density matrix renormalization group method and compute va...
