We investigated temperature dependent Raman spectra of the one-dimensional spin-ladder compound SrCu2O3. At low temperatures a two-magnon peak is identified at 3160+/-10 cm^(-1) and its temperature dependence analyzed in terms of a thermal expansion model. We find that the two-magnon peak position must include a cyclic ring exchange of J_cycl/J_perp=0.09-0.25 with a coupling constant along the rungs of J_perp approx. 1215 cm^(-1) (1750 K) in order to be consistent with other ...

We report measurements of the specific heat and the thermal conductivity of the model Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain cuprate Sr$_{2}$CuO$_{3}$ at low temperatures. In addition to a nearly isotropic phonon heat transport, we find a quasi one-dimensional excess thermal conductivity along the chain direction, most likely associated with spin excitations (spinons). The spinon energy current is limited mainly by scattering on defects and phonons. Analyzing the specific heat data, the i...

We have measured the thermal heat conductivity kappa of the compounds Sr_14Cu_24O_41 and Ca_9La_5Cu_24O_41 containing doped and undoped spin ladders, respectively. We find a huge anisotropy of both, the size and the temperature dependence of kappa which we interpret in terms of a very large heat conductivity due to the magnetic excitations of the one-dimensional spin ladders. This magnon heat conductivity decreases with increasing hole doping of the ladders. The magnon heat t...

We have measured the thermal conductivity along the [101] direction, kappa_[101]_, along the [10-1] direction, kappa_[10-1]_, and along the b-axis, kappa_b_, of the quasi one-dimensional S=1/2 spin system Sr_2_V_3_O_9_ in magnetic fields up to 14 T, in order to find the thermal conductivity due to spinons and to clarify whether the spin-chains run along the [101] or [10-1] direction. It has been found that both kappa_[101]_, kappa_[10-1]_ and kappa_b_ show one peak around 10 ...

We achieve a comprehensive understanding of the magnetic excitations observed by electric spin resonance and far-infrared spectroscopy in a frustrated spin gap system ${\rm SrCu_2(BO_3)_2}$ by considering the effects of magnetoelectric couplings and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in the Shastry-Sutherland model. The transitions from the dimer singlet ground state to the triplon and the bound states of two triplons are electroactive through the magnetoelectric couplings, e...

The resistivity and the thermopower for Bi2Sr2Ca{1-x}RxCu2O8 single crystals are measured and analyzed with a special interest in the parent antiferromagnet insulators. Above room temperature, the parent insulators show an electric conduction confined in the CuO2 plane and a decreasing thermopower with temperature, which are very similar to those for high-$T_c$ cuprates. These data strongly suggest that essential anomalies of high-Tc cuprates inheres in the parent insulators.

A key unexplained feature of cuprate superconductors is the upturn in their normal state electrical resistivity $\rho(T)$ seen at low temperature inside the pseudogap phase. We examined this issue via measurements of the thermal conductivity $\kappa(T)$ down to 50 mK and in fields up to 17 T on the cuprate La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ at dopings $p = 0.13$, 0.136, 0.143 and 0.18. At $p$ = 0.136, 0.143, and 0.18, we observe an initial increase of the electronic thermal conductivity...

The magnon thermal conductivity $\kappa_{\mathrm{mag}}$ of the spin ladders in $\rm Sr_{14}Cu_{24-x}Zn_xO_{41}$ has been investigated at low doping levels $x=0$, 0.125, 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75. The Zn-impurities generate nonmagnetic defects which define an upper limit for $l_{\mathrm{mag}}$ and therefore allow a clear-cut relation between $l_{\mathrm{mag}}$ and $\kappa_{\mathrm{mag}}$ to be established independently of any model. Over a large temperature range we observe a progres...

The transport of heat and charge in cuprates was measured in undoped and heavily-underdoped single crystal La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_{4+delta} (LSCO). In underdoped LSCO, the thermal conductivity is found to decrease with increasing magnetic field in the T --> 0 limit, in striking contrast to the increase observed in all superconductors, including cuprates at higher doping. The suppression of superconductivity with magnetic field shows that a novel thermal metal-to-insulator transition...

The structure and magnetic interactions of the triplon Bose-Einstein condensation candidates Ba$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$ and Sr$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$ have been studied thoroughly in the literature, but little is known about a possible triplon condensation in the corresponding solid solution Ba$_{3-x}$Sr$_x$Cr$_2$O$_8$. We have prepared various members of this solid solution and systematically examined their magnetic properties in high magnetic fields up to 60 T and at low temperatures down to...
