We performed muon spin rotation/relaxation measurements to investigate the magnetic behavior of $T^{\prime}$-type Eu$_2$CuO$_4$ (ECO), which is the parent compound of electron-doped cuprate superconductors, and the effects of oxygen-reduction annealing on its magnetism. In as-sintered (AS) ECO, we clarified the development of magnetic correlations upon cooling below $T_\mathrm{N1}$ (= 265 K) as well as the coexistence of a dominant fluctuating spin state and partially ordered...

The doping of charge carriers into the CuO2 planes of copper oxide Mott insulators causes a gradual destruction of antiferromagnetism and the emergence of high-temperature superconductivity. Optimal superconductivity is achieved at a doping concentration p beyond which further increases in doping cause a weakening and eventual disappearance of superconductivity. A potential explanation for this demise is that ferromagnetic fluctuations compete with superconductivity in the ov...

Muon-spin-relaxation measurements have been performed for the partially Zn-substituted La_2-x_Sr_x_Cu_1-y_Zn_y_O_4_ with y=0-0.10 in the overdoped regime up to x=0.30. In the 3 % Zn-substituted samples up to x=0.27, exponential-like depolarization of muon spins has been observed at low temperatures, indicating Zn-induced slowing-down of the Cu-spin fluctuations. The depolarization rate decreases with increasing x and almost no fast depolarization of muon spins has been observ...

The local 4f-electronic spin dynamics and magnetic order in YbNi4P2 were studied by means of muon-spin relaxation measurements. Zero-field muon-spin relaxation proves static magnetic order with a strongly reduced ordered Yb3+ moment of (2.5-4.6) \times 10-2{\mu}B, below TC = 140 mK. Above TC, the muon-spin polarization P(t,B) is dominated by quasihomogeneous spin fluctuations and exhibits a time-field scaling relation P(t,B) = P(t/B{\gamma}), indicating cooperative critical s...

By means of muon spin spectroscopy, we have found that K$_{0.49}$CoO$_2$ crystals undergo successive magnetic transitions from a high-T paramagnetic state to a magnetic ordered state below 60 K and then to a second ordered state below 16 K, even though K_{0.49}CoO_2 is metallic at least down to 4 K. An isotropic magnetic behavior and wide internal-field distributions suggest the formation of a commensurate helical spin density wave (SDW) state below 16 K, while a linear SDW s...

We report muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) and magnetic susceptibility measurements on Cu(Cl,Br)La(Nb,Ta)$_{2}$O$_{7}$, which demonstrate: (a) the absence of static magnetism in (CuCl)LaNb$_{2}$O$_{7}$ down to 15 mK confirming a spin-gapped ground state; (b) phase separation between partial volumes with a spin-gap and static magnetism in (CuCl)La(Nb,Ta)$_{2}$O$_{7}$; (c) history-dependent magnetization in the (Nb,Ta) and (Cl,Br) substitution systems; (d) a uniform long-range co...

We have investigated the magnetic properties of CuNCN, the first nitrogen-based analogue of cupric oxide, CuO. Our muon spin relaxation, nuclear magnetic resonance and electron spin resonance studies reveal that classical magnetic ordering is absent down to lowest temperatures. However, large enhancement of spin correlations and unexpected inhomogeneous magnetism have been observed below 80 K. We attribute this to a peculiar fragility of the electronic state against weak pert...

We present the muon spin relaxation/rotation spectra in the multiferroic compound (Cu,Zn)$_{3}$Mo$_{2}$O$_{9}$. The parent material Cu$_{3}$Mo$_{2}$O$_{9}$ has a multiferroic phase below $T_{\rm N}$ = 8.0 K, where the canted antiferromagnetism and the ferroelectricity coexist. The asymmetry time spectra taken at RIKEN-RAL pulsed muon facility show a drastic change at $T_{\rm N}$. At low temperatures the weakly beating oscillation caused by the static internal magnetic fields ...

Zero-field muon spin relaxation (ZF-$\mu$SR) measurements were undertaken on under- and overdoped samples of superconducting YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ to determine the origin of the weak static magnetism recently reported in this system. The temperature dependence of the muon spin relaxation rate in overdoped crystals displays an unusual behavior in the superconducting state. A comparison to the results of NQR and lattice structure experiments on highly doped samples provides co...

We present a muon-spin relaxation investigation of the Ising chain magnet Ca_{3}Co_{2-x}Mn_{x}O_{6} (x~0.95). We find dynamic spin fluctuations persisting down to the lowest measured temperature of 1.6 K. The previously observed transition at around T ~18 K is interpreted as a subtle change in dynamics for a minority of the spins coupling to the muon that we interpret as spins locking into clusters. The dynamics of this fraction of spins freeze below a temperature T_{SF}~8 K,...
