We explore the combined pressure and finite-size effects on the in-plane penetration depth \lambda_{ab} in YBa_2Cu_4O_8. Even though this cuprate is stoichiometric the finite-size scaling analysis of \lambda_{ab}^{-2}(T) uncovers the granular nature and reveals domains with nanoscale size L_{c} along the c-axis. L_{c} ranges from 33.2 Angstrom to 28.9 Angstrom at pressures from 0.5 to 11.5 kbar. These observations raise serious doubts on the existence of a phase coherent macr...

We have measured the thermal conductivity tensor of a twinned YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ single crystal as a function of angle $\theta$ between the magnetic field applied parallel to the CuO$_2$ planes and the heat current direction, at different magnetic fields and at T=13.8 K. Clear fourfold and twofold variations in the field-angle dependence of $\kappa_{xx}$ and $\kappa_{xy}$ were respectively recorded in accordance with the d-wave pairing symmetry of the order parameter. The...

We report measurements of the magnetic susceptibility of twinned single crystals of YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6+x}$ from just above their superconducting transition temperatures to 300 K with magnetic fields of up to 5 T applied parallel and perpendicular to the CuO$_2$ planes at 7 values of $x$. Appropriate analysis allows the relatively small, but still important, Curie terms to be separated from other contributions to the susceptibility. Our data support a picture in which the ...

We study the oxygen isotope (^{16}O,^{18}O) and finite size effects in Y_{1-x}Pr_{x}Ba_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-\delta} by in-plane penetration depth (\lambda _{ab}) measurements. A significant change of the length L_{c} of the superconducting domains along the c-axis and \lambda_{ab}^{2} is deduced, yielding the relative isotope shift \Delta L_{c}/L_{c}\approx \Delta \lambda _{ab}^{2}/\lambda_{ab}^{2}\approx -0.14 for x=0, 0.2 and 0.3. This uncovers the existence and relevance of the c...

Measurement of the penetration depth as a function of temperature using millimeter wave transmission in the range 130-500GHz are reported for three YBCO thin films. The experiment provides the absolute value for the penetration depth at low temperature: the derivation from the transmission data and the experimental uncertainty are discussed. We find a zero temperature penetration depth of 199+/-20nm, 218+/-20nm and 218+/-20nm, for YBCO-50nm/LaAlO3 (pristine), YBCO-130nm/MgO a...

The effect of pressure on the magnetic penetration depth $\lambda$ was tested in the hole-doped superconductor YBa2Cu3O(7-d) and in the electron-doped one Sr0.9La0.1CuO2 by means of magnetization measurements. Whereas a large change of $\lambda$ was found in YBa2Cu3O(7-d), confirming the non-adiabatic character of the electron-phonon coupling in hole-doped superconductors, the same quantity is not affected by pressure in the electron-doped Sr0.9La0.1CuO2, suggesting a close s...

Analysis of the a-b plane optical conductivity $\sigma_{ab}$ for both twinned and untwinned YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-\delta}$ as a function of temperature and doping shows that below a well defined temperature T*, a dip in the spectrum systematically appears separating the infrared charge excitation spectrum into two components with distinct energy scales. The change from monotonic behaviour in $\sigma_{ab}$ is found to be concurrent with the onset of phonon anomalies in Raman ...

Temperature-dependent London penetration depth, $\lambda(T)$, of a high quality optimally-doped $\text{YBa}_{2}\text{Cu}_{3}\text{O}_{7-\delta}$ single crystal was measured using tunnel-diode resonator. Controlled artificial disorder was induced at low-temperature of 20~K by 2.5 MeV electron irradiation at accumulating large doses of $3.8\times10^{19}$ and $5.3\times10^{19}$ electrons per $\textrm{cm}^{2}$. The irradiation caused significant suppression of the superconductor'...

The effect of thermal phase fluctuations (TPF's) on the ab-plane penetration depth, lambda(T), of thin YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) (YBCO) films is found to be much smaller than expected from the paradigm of cuprates as weakly-coupled 2D superconducting layers. A 2D vortex-pair-unbinding transition is observed, but the effective thickness for fluctuations is the film thickness, not a CuO bilayer thickness. In a strongly underdoped YBCO film, Tc= 34 K, TPF's suppress Tc by only about 3 K...

We present high precision measurements of the penetration depth \lambda of single crystals of \kappa-(ET)_2Cu[N(CN)2]Br and \kappa-(ET)_2Cu(NCS)_2 at temperature down to 0.4 K. We find that, at low temperatures, the in-plane penetration depth varies as a fractional power law, \lambda\sim T^1.5. W hilst this may be taken as evidence for novel bose excitation processes, we show that the data are also consistent with a quasi-linear variation of the superfluid density, as is expe...
