We report the first direct observation of the oxygen-isotope ($^{16}$O/$^{18}$O) effect on the in-plane penetration depth $\lambda_{ab}$ in a nearly optimally doped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ film using the novel low-energy muon-spin rotation technique. Spin polarized low energy muons are implanted in the film at a known depth $z$ beneath the surface and precess in the local magnetic field $B(z)$. This feature allows us to measure directly the profile $B(z)$ of the magnetic ...

We have studied the oxygen-isotope effects on T_{c} and in-plane penetration depth \lambda_{ab}(0) in an optimally doped 3-layer cuprate Bi_{1.6}Pb_{0.4}Sr_{2}Ca_{2}Cu_{3}O_{10+y} (T_{c} \sim 107 K). We find a small oxygen-isotope effect on T_{c} (\alpha_{O} = 0.019), and a substantial effect on \lambda_{ab} (0) (\Delta \lambda_{ab} (0)/\lambda_{ab} (0) = 2.5\pm0.5%). The present results along with the previously observed isotope effects in single-layer and double-layer cupra...

We report a study of the pressure effect (PE) on the in-plane magnetic field penetration depth lambda_{ab} in YBa_2Cu_4O_8 by means of Meissner fraction measurements. A pronounced PE on lambda_{ab}^{-2}(0) was observed with a maximum relative shift of \Delta\lambda^{-2}_{ab}/\lambda^{-2}_{ab}= 44(3)% at a pressure of 10.2 kbar. It arises from the pressure dependence of the effective in-plane charge carrier mass and pressure induced charge carrier transfer from the CuO chains ...

We report measurements of the oxygen isotope effect (OIE) on the in-plane penetration depth \lambda_{ab}(0) in underdoped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} single crystals. A highly sensitive magnetic torque sensor with a resolution of \Delta \tau ~ 10^{-12} Nm was used for the magnetic measurements on microcrystals with a mass of ~ 10 microg. The OIE on \lambda_{ab}^{-2}(0) is found to be -10(2)% for x = 0.080 and -8(1)% for x = 0.086. It arises mainly from the oxygen mass dependence of...

The electron hole concentration p in the CuO2 planes of YBa2Cu3O6+x (YBCO) has been evaluated using the unit cell length in the c-direction together with a simple estimation for p in the chain oxygen ordered phases. The empirical relationship between p and c obtained allows calculation of p from the c-axis lattice parameter for the entire doping range of YBCO. It is also suggested that the empirical parabola describing the relationship between Tc and p in La2-dSrdCuO4 is reas...

We present measurements of the magnetic penetration depth, \lambda^{-2}(T), in Pr_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4-y} and La_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4-y} films at three Ce doping levels, x, near optimal. Optimal and overdoped films are qualitatively and quantitatively different from underdoped films. For example, \lambda^{-2}(0) decreases rapidly with underdoping but is roughly constant above optimal doping. Also, \lambda^{-2}(T) at low T is exponential at optimal and overdoping but is quadratic at...

The absolute values and temperature, T, dependence of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth, $\lambda_{ab}$, of La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 and HgBa_2CuO_{4+\delta} have been measured as a function of carrier concentration. We find that the superfluid density, $\rho_s$, changes substantially and systematically with doping. The values of $\rho_{s}(0)$ are closely linked to the available low energy spectral weight as determined by the electronic entropy just above T_c and the initial s...

We have measured the penetration depth of overdoped Y0.9Ca0.1Ba2Cu3O7-delta (Ca-YBCO) thin films using two different methods. The change of the penetration depth as a function of temperature has been measured using the parallel plate resonator (PPR), while its absolute value was obtained from a quasi-optical transmission measurements. Both sets of measurements are compatible with an order parameter of the form: Delta*dx2-y2+i*delta*dxy, with Delta=14.5 +- 1.5 meV and delta=1....

The $c$-axis penetration depth $\Delta\lambda_c$ in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ (BSCCO) single crystals as a function of temperature has been determined using two techniques, namely, measurements of the ac-susceptibility at a frequency of 100 kHz and the surface impedance at 9.4 GHz. Both techniques yield an almost linear function $\Delta\lambda_c(T)\propto T$ in the temperature range T<0.5 T_c. Electrodynamic analysis of the impedance anisotropy has allowed us to esti...

The in-plane penetration depth \lambda(T) is measured in electron-doped single crystals Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4-x (NCCO) and Pr1.85Ce0.15CuO4-x (PCCO) using a 11 MHz LC resonator. In NCCO, \lambda(T) exhibits a minimum at 3.8 K and a pronounced upturn down to 0.4 K due to the paramagnetic contribution of Nd3+ ions. The London penetration depth contribution is linear in T. The paramagnetic contribution is absent in PCCO, where \lambda(T)~T^2 at low temperatures. Our results indicate ...
