It is shown that, for a class of Hamiltonians of XXZ chains in an external magnetic field that are small perturbations of an Ising Hamiltonian, the spectral gap above the ground-state energy remains strictly positive when the perturbation is turned on, uniformly in the length of the chain. The result is proven for both the ferromagnetic and the antiferromagnetic Ising Hamiltonian; in the latter case the external magnetic field is required to be small, and for an even number o...

We apply the microscopic coupled-cluster method (CCM) to the spin-$1\over2$ $XXZ$ models on both the one-dimensional chain and the two-dimensional square lattice. Based on a systematic approximation scheme of the CCM developed by us previously, we carry out high-order {\it ab initio} calculations using computer-algebraic techniques. The ground-state properties of the models are obtained with high accuracy as functions of the anisotropy parameter. Furthermore, our CCM analysis...

An expansion based on renormalization group methods for the spin correlation function in the z direction of the Heisenberg-Ising XYZ chain with an external magnetic field directed as the z axis is derived. Moreover, by using the hidden symmetries of the model, we show that the running coupling constants are small, if the coupling in the z direction is small enough, that a critical index appearing in the correlation function is exactly vanishing (because of an approximate Ward...

By considering the one-particle and two-particle scattering data of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain at T=0 we derive a continuum limit relating the spin chain to the 1D Bose gas. Applying this limit to the quantum transfer matrix approach of the Heisenberg chain we obtain expressions for the correlation functions of the Bose gas at arbitrary temperatures.

We study the tuning effect of a transverse magnetic field on the confinement of spinons in the infinite XXZ spin-1/2 chain. The spinon confinement in this model takes place in the gapped antiferromagnetic phase upon application of a staggered longitudinal magnetic field. The tuning transverse magnetic field has mutually orthogonal uniform and staggered components. The energy spectra of the two-spinon bound states (the `mesons') in the confinement regime are analytically calcu...

Using the time-evolving block decimation, we study the spin transport through spin-1/2 and spin-1 XXZ chains subjected to an external magnetic field and contacted to noninteracting fermionic leads. For generic system-lead couplings, the spin conductance exhibits several resonances as a function of the magnetic-field strength. In the spin-1/2 but not the spin-1 case, the coupling to the leads can be fine-tuned to reach a conducting fixed point, where the peak structure is wash...

Using the density matrix renormalization group technique, we evaluate the low-energy spectrum (ground state and first excited states) of the anisotropic antiferromagnetic spin-one-half chain under magnetic fields. We study both homogeneous longitudinal and transversal fields as well as the influence of a transversal staggered field on opening of a spin-gap. We find that only a staggered transversal field opens a substantial gap.

Combining a lattice path integral formulation for thermodynamics with the solution of the quantum inverse scattering problem for local spin operators, we derive a multiple integral representation for the time-dependent longitudinal correlation function of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg XXZ chain at finite temperature and in an external magnetic field. Our formula reproduces the previous results in the following three limits: the static, the zero-temperature and the XY limits.

We study the excitation spectrum of the one-dimensional spin-1/2 XXZ chain with antiferromagnetic Ising anisotropy across a magnetic quantum phase transition induced by the application of a site-dependent transverse magnetic field. Motivated by the chain antiferromagnet BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$, we consider a situation where the transverse magnetic field has a strong uniform component and a weaker staggered part. To determine the nature of the excitations giving rise to the spin dy...

Magnetic and thermodynamic properties of the anisotropic XYZ spin-1/2 finite chain under both homogeneous and inhomogeneous magnetic fields are theoretically studied at low temperature. Using exact diagonalization method (ED), we study the magnetization, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat of the model characterized in terms of the finite correlation length in the presence of three different magnetic fields including longitudinal, transverse and transverse staggered mag...
