Using the tight-binding BHZ model and Landauer-B\"uttiker formalism, the topological invariant of the finite width of ribbons of HgTe/CdTe quantum well is studied in the absence and presence of an external transverse electric field. It will be recognized that a critical current changes topological invariant of ribbons of quantum well. This topological phase transition, which occurred by adjustment of the bias voltage, depends on the width of the sample and the gate voltage. T...

The quantum Hall effect is usually observed when the two-dimensional electron gas is subjected to an external magnetic field, so that their quantum states form Landau levels. In this work we predict that a new phenomenon, the quantum anomalous Hall effect, can be realized in Hg$_{1-y}$Mn$_{y}$Te quantum wells, without the external magnetic field and the associated Landau levels. This effect arises purely from the spin polarization of the $Mn$ atoms, and the quantized Hall con...

Inverted HgTe/CdTe quantum wells have been used as a platform for the realization of 2D topological insulators, bulk insulator materials with spin-helical metallic edges states protected by time-reversal symmetry. This work investigates the spectrum and the charge transport in HgTe/CdTe quantum well junctions both in the topological regime and in the absence of time-reversal symmetry. We model the system using the BHZ effective Hamiltonian and compute the transport properties...

The two-dimensional topological insulator phase has been observed previously in single HgTe-based quantum wells with inverted subband ordering. In double quantum wells (DQWs), coupling between the layers introduces additional degrees of freedom leading to a rich phase picture. By studying local and nonlocal resistance in HgTe-based DQWs, we observe both the gapless semimetal phase and the topological insulator phase, depending on parameters of the samples and according to the...

We propose a topological quantum phase transition for quantum states with different Berry phases in hole-doped III-V semiconductor quantum wells with bulk and structure inversion asymmetry. The Berry phase of the occupied Bloch states can be characteristic of topological metallic states. It is found that the adjustment of thickness of the quantum well may cause a transition of Berry phase in two-dimensional hole gas. Correspondingly, the jump of spin Hall conductivity accompa...

Atomically thin topological materials are attracting growing attention for their potential to radically transform classical and quantum electronic device concepts. Amongst them is the quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator - a two-dimensional state of matter that arises from an interplay of topological band inversion and strong spin-orbit coupling, with large tunable bulk band gaps up to 800meV and gapless, one-dimensional edge states. Reviewing recent advances in materials scienc...

Following the recent theoretical proposal and experiment on quantum spin Hall effect in HgTe/CdTe quantum wells, we consider a single magnetic impurity localized in the bulk of the system, which we treat as a classical spin. It is shown that there are always localized excited states in the bulk energy gap for arbitrarily strong impurity strength in inverted region, while the localized excited states vanish for very strong impurity strength in normal region. Similar conclusion...

In this work, we theoretically investigate the light-induced topological phases and finite-size crossovers in a paradigmatic quantum spin Hall (QSH) system with high-frequency pumping optics. Taking the HgTe quantum well for an example, our numerical results show that circularly polarized light can break time-reversal symmetry and induce the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) phase. In particular, the coupling between the edge states is spin dependent and is related not only to the...

We study experimentally the transport properties of "inverted" semiconductor HgTe-based quantum well, which is related to the two-dimensional topological insulator, in diffusive transport regime. We perform nonlocal electrical measurements in the absence of the magnetic field and observe large signal due to the edge states. It demonstrates, that the edge states can propagate over long distance 1 mm, and, therefore, there is no difference between local and non local electric...

We investigate the behavior of spin polarized currents in two-dimensional topological insulators (TI). Stationary solutions inside a HgTe/CdTe quantum well (QW) were obtained by Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang (BHZ) model modified by a electric and magnetic barrier inside a non-completely insulating bulk. An attenuated quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect occurs in the gaped region with an apparent Klein-like paradox. Even more interesting, for strong potential regime, the interaction betwee...
